Your Education Must be a Priority for the Entire Family

Parents, especially moms, tend to put their own needs aside to focus on their families. If you are returning to school, you need to have a serious conversation with your family about priorities. In essence, the whole family is going to college with you and will need to make adjustments. Older kids can make their own beds, start and fold loads of laundry, vacuum, dust, etc. Younger kids can begin hanging up their clothes, putting dirty clothes in the hamper, setting the table, etc. Teenagers can learn to cook and serve meals to the family. You will be so exhausted and pressed for time yourself that it is imperative that everyone pitches in.

If you have a spouse or partner, your going back to school will also affect them. They may be resentful of the hours you spend bent over a book, and feel ignored. They may also feel left out when you relate all the witty conversations you’re having with your new schoolmates. Don’t shut them out, but explain your schedule of assignments to them to help them understand your needs. Reassure them that this too shall pass, and you’ll have a shiny new degree or qualification soon.  Plan meals and shop ahead. Make the freezer, the slow cooker and the electric grill your best friend. There are many great websites with ideas for meal planning, and cooking ahead.

With a little planning and a little pushing your family to help you pick up around the house, you can be a successful back-to-school mom too.
