Work From Home And Support Your Family!
The constant flux of the health care and insurance industries has created a major boom for one particular profession. Officially they are called Medical Records and Health Information Technicians. We prefer to call them medical billing. They simply call themselves medical biller. Due to a number of perks, it's also become one of the most popular curriculums offered at online colleges.
The U.S. Department of Labor defines them as a people who assemble patients' health information; and that can range from the number of days spent in a hospital or clinic to any medication given, etc., then code and bill appropriate insurance carriers. What the insurer won't cover, they then bill the patient. If you need more information about college degrees, look on the internet.
It's a career path that only needs two years of education, making entrance relatively easy. The primary responsibilities are discerning what the appropriate codes are for every q-tip, prescription, therapeutic method and whatever else can be billed for, and applying it to the appropriate payer. If the insurer doesn't feel like paying for a service, they will send the rejection back with a code of their own. From there, it's up to the billing expert to either try again, or bill the patient.
As this is an extremely regulated industry, knowledge of rules and bylaws are also needed. Also, as various governing bodies ranging from federal and state governments as well as professional organizations is also required. As these regs change constantly, a medical billing expert's job is one of constant education. One has to stay on top of such things as HIPAA, electronic processing software and Medicaid/Medicare are also de rigueur.
Interestingly, with health care and health insurance now being reviewed by the federal government, the need for medical billing will probably stay in high demand for some time to come. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports there were over a half million medical billers as of 2008. They expect a 15% growth in the profession, slightly over 600,000 by 2018. There is an abundance of information about accredited online universities on the web.
The Bureau also reports the average salary for a medical biller is slightly over $30,000 as of 2008. The demand being so pressing, the way most medical billers increase their income is move from one organization to another about every two years. Even in the current employment crisis, if one checks their local classifieds they will see a number of ads placed every week. Advancement is also possible if one knows how to jump. Many major hospitals and clinics actually have whole departments just to handle all their billing.
Once you have completed your college degree programs, and found employment as a medical biller, the compensation usually includes excellent health benefits and career advancement/work-study programs and financial aid to advance with a distance learning course. Another way many medical billers have increased their revenue streams is by setting up their own operations.
