Save on College Textbooks

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Kelly Liyakasa" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'kelly-liyakasa/23144">Kelly Liyakasa

Last minute cookouts and three-day-weekends are signaling the end of summer, and many college students are making the dreaded trek back to campus. Moving in, meeting the roommates and deciphering one’s new schedule are enough tasks to handle for any student. When expenses like college textbooks and meal plans are tacked on, the new school year is enough to make any student want to run back to mom and dad’s. However, cutting costs doesn’t have to be too painful.

Before you get images of semester long Ramen-noodle dinners in your head, there are ways to save your cash, such as utilizing college textbook services. The average college student spends around $700-$1,000 a year, according to a Student Financial Assistance Advisory Committee report. While this may be the norm for university-level textbooks, students and parents alike must deal with the financial aftermath.

College textbook services like eCampus provide free shipping if you spend around $50 on their site, reports 6StarReviews.com. Besides offering virtual campus bookstores and massive clearance sections, this service allows students to resell their used textbooks to other students who may need a particular title. This not only saves the buyer some cash, it gives the seller a chance to redeem a few bucks on last semester’s books.

When it feels like endless piles of bills are stacking up on your dorm room desk, the last thing on your mind is studying. Inevitable nights out on the town and living independently contribute to the estimated $28 billion a year spent on entertainment by college enrollees. When textbook costs alone are added into this equation, the burden placed on any student can be heavy. Using a college textbook service will prove to be cost-efficient in the long run and will even save you from that long line down at the bookstore.

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Groshan Fabiola" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'groshan-fabiola/3710">Groshan Fabiola

College textbooks prices are continuously increasing, and this has become a problem for a large number of students with limited budgets. Students must acquire many textbooks for their studies and with today's prices the total amount of money that has to be spent on these college textbooks is pretty large and this problem becomes an obstacle in the student's path to graduation. Therefore many students have begun to consider the textbooks which were once accessible to everybody something unreachable and unaffordable. This is disturbing, and something must be done so that all students can access all the books they need for their education. You may say that there are libraries of course, but libraries have limited amounts of each book and in many cases students can't take the book at home to study it at their will, they can only read it inside the library, which may be disturbing for students who need privacy to learn.

Most of the colleges and governmental institutions don't do anything to solve this problem and they let students do whatever they can. Therefore, the only solution to this problem is to buy much cheaper books from the students that graduated or don't need them any longer. This way you get the same books that you need but at prices that everyone can afford. This business is profitable in both ways, because it helps both students who can't afford to buy all the college textbooks they need and those who don't need them anymore to sell them and make some profit from something otherwise wasted.

If you are interested in buying second-hand college textbooks and saving good money you should visit one of the websites that are specialized in the commercialization of college textbooks. This way you'll find all the textbooks you need, because these websites have domain categories, where you can search for all the subjects studied in college, from mathematics to biology or astrophysics, and you won't even leave your house.

Also, if you are interested in selling your old college textbooks you can find one of these websites and list the books that you need to sell. Whomever needs one of the college textbooks you are offering can buy it from you with the help of the website.
These websites have a search engine that can find any book you need and can also compare the prices of the textbooks and help you find the best deal!

Many times college teachers dictate the students what books to buy in order to learn everything about his/her subject and pass the exams. After finding this information out, ask your teacher or a friend that has the book what he book's ISBN code is. Then type the ISBN code in a college textbooks-selling website and you'll find the exact same book but at a much lower price. As simple as that!

Until the government gives colleges more funds, which isn't likely to happen in the near future, the method listed above is the best method to get very good prices on college textbooks, so if you are a student that needs textbooks just search for a website that sells them and you'll save good money

McGraw-Hill Companies started humbly over a century ago with the co-founders of the company specializing in journals dedicated to engineering and railroading. James McGraw and John Hill each worked separately and wouldn't merge until 1909. The technology and the science of the time fascinated both men and the company would continue to grow.

McGraw and Hill would lead their publishing company into the arenas of aviation, health and atomic energy over the course of the first half of the twentieth century. In was in the 1950s that the company expanded into publishing educational materials. They had dabbled in producing textbooks for engineering and science since their original merger, however now they would include many other subjects as well. This would eventually lead to the name of McGraw-Hill being synonymous with educational books.

McGraw-Hill Companies would acquire Gregg, California Test Bureau and F.W. Dodge companies. This would pave the way for publishing Gregg Shorthand, Standardized Testing for K-12 and foreign language materials for educators. In 1989 Eastman Kodak, R.R. Donnelley and McGraw-Hill would combine forces to release Prism Custom Publishing. This permitted teachers to custom design their own textbooks for their classrooms.

In 2000 the company grew in their children's educational field. More companies merged that were highly thought of in this arena. Students in kindergarten through high school have all had at least one series of books printed by McGraw-Hill. Glencoe is a subsidiary of McGraw-Hill and is booming with their Journey Across Time Social Studies series for middle school and high school. Many districts nationwide use this series, including the Nashville school system.

Journey Across Time uses the art of storytelling mixed with pure fact and stunning visuals. After all, the book shares authorship with National Geographic. History, geography, what is actually happening in the time period that is being studied all coalesce into one giant picture of understanding for the students.

For instance, from the offset you start with the first civilizations of man. Journey Across Time covers the Paleolithic Era, Mesopotamia, Assyria's military, the Chaldean Empire and King Nebuchadnezzar all in the first chapter. From there the children are led through Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Israelites. Together you will be able to see the thread twine in and out as the cultures and societies tell of their life here on earth. Learn how the two met, how Moses is not only a Biblical figure but an historical one, as well. See the Canaanites being fought off by the Israelites.

The lessons don't stop there. The unique way of teaching history in this series will intrigue even the parents in the household! Learn how the Greeks and the Romans influenced each other and understand how these peoples came to populate most of the known world. Understand how an entire empire can fall.

You will be able to share insights into the early days of India, China and Japan. See how religions such as Christianity, Islam, Muslim and Buddhism can help shape entire countries and empires. Journey Across Time will bring you forward to the present day from day one.

McGraw-Hill and Glencoe continue as provider to the needs of educational institutions. Resources include a location to find grants, develop, and message boards between teachers and parents. Standards will be met and exceeded, supporting the No Child Left Behind legislation.

How to Overcome the High Prices of College Textbooks

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Groshan Fabiola" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'groshan-fabiola/3710">Groshan Fabiola

Every year students require various college textbooks for their classes, spending a small fortune to purchase them. High standards should be improved in the business deal of purchasing new and used books so that all students would benefit of improved methods of learning. In recent years, college bookstores have begun to lose their monopoly over the market, generating pronounced imbalances regarding the average costs of most study materials.

Thousands of students who will soon head off to college campuses nationwide are beginning to realize that it takes quite a bit of capital these days to buy textbooks. In the past two decades, college textbooks prices have increased considerably, at twice the rate of inflation. According to government estimates, students and their families have spent more than $6 billion on new and used textbooks over the period of the academic year 2003-2004. During 2002 and 2004, the average college student spent up to $900 a year for textbooks, around 3 percent more than in the last seven years. Recent studies have also revealed the fact that the average student nowadays spends about $100 on a single curriculum-oriented new book and about $65 on a similar used book.

Fortunately, there are various high-standard educational institutions that are currently striving to overcome such topical issues regarding the low affordability of curricular study materials. The University of Phoenix for instance, has corrected such problems by modifying the general curriculum and preparing a lighter course load for attending students. By replacing most traditional textbooks with e-books, the University of Phoenix has become the first "textbook-less" college in the country.

Highly skilled students joining selected programs nowadays benefit for Microsoft's e-book reader software. However, in order to obtain unlimited access to interactive materials and up-to-date texts online, students still have to pay a per-course fee. In present, the University of Phoenix has almost 95,500 students at more than 100 locations across the country, currently striving to integrate all students in the e-book-oriented study program.

In order to achieve a better position on the market, the great majority of booksellers have recently started to sell textbooks at a considerable discount off the cover price. Furthermore, special areas have been created in order to improve the selling of textbooks on the Internet. Another great source for college books are the online used bookstores, which help students find the textbooks of their interest at considerably lower prices.

Students must be very careful when closing a deal on the Web. Considering the fact that textbook prices greatly vary on the Internet, students are advised to closely analyze all possible alternatives before choosing a certain bookseller over another. It is important to note that the purchase price should not be the only considered aspect when buying textbooks online; students should also factor in shipping costs and delivery time before deciding upon buying their desired textbooks on the Internet.

In order to fight the high cost of college textbooks you should double-check for the correct 10-digit International Standard Book Number, or ISBN. This number is situated above the bar code on the textbook's back cover or title page. When you are purchasing online you should check for the ISBN along with the book title, author and edition.

If you simply can't afford new textbooks, you should consider purchasing used textbooks, as they are considerably less expensive than their new counterparts. You can purchase a used textbook at about 75 percent of the retail price of a new textbook. Prices vary anywhere from $10 to $80, with an approximate average of $40. Due to the fact that used books are a scarce and limited resource, often being sold out by the beginning of the school year, students may need to shop early in order to obtain their required used books. In spite of this fact, used textbooks are still a reliable, cost-effective alternative to new textbooks, allowing students to spend less money for their education.

5 Tips To Save Money On College Textbooks

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Pope Jones" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'pope-jones/338257">Pope Jones

Considering the very fact the prices of college textbooks are skyrocketing these days. We all have been watching a significant rise in the prices with every passing day. Every year, new versions come and they are sold at a much higher price than that of the previous versions. This has been one of the main reasons why the cost of attending college has now become overwhelmingly very high. However, you will be glad to know that there are still several alternative ways out there, which you use thoroughly, can help you save a great deal of money in this regard. Following is a brief rundown on how to buy these books at cheap prices and eventually save on college expenses.

 Buy Older Edition, If Possible

Look at the kind of books you need for your classes and ask your professor if an older edition of the college textbooks will do. If they say yes, you can go ahead and buy the old edition books and save some good bucks. A year old edition does not have much difference as compared to the latest one. If you have friends or acquaintances who have already taken the course and the books you need are just sitting around with them, you may like to borrow the books from them.

Compare Prices At Bookstores With The Online Prices

Do not buy the books directly from your college bookstores. You had better first take down the price list from there and then compare the same with the online prices. In most cases, you are very much likely to get heavy discounts if you buy your books online, as there are many places on Internet that sell college textbooks at a much reasonable price as compared to the prices charged by the college bookstores.

 Rent Your Textbook

Another good alternative is to rent your textbooks instead of buying the same. It is probably the cheapest option available for you. The best thing about renting books is that once your course is complete, the books will not be sitting around.

Become A Library Member And Get Books From There

There might be many books in the list that you may require for your course, but you probably will not be using all of them frequently. If that is the case, you may save your money by not buying the book at the first place. You can borrow it from your college library. But, this strategy works only for those books that you use rarely because libraries often have limited stocks of a particular book and they lend only college textbooks for a short period of time.

 Buy Used College Books

Many bookstores and websites sell used books at a significantly much cheaper price as compared to the price charged for the new ones. The content of the book however is not different, and thus is in no sense less valuable than the new one. So, this can be a good option for you.

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Andrew Douglas" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'andrew-douglas/262391">Andrew Douglas

In this the latest extract from 'The Secret Guide To Academic Writing & Study' I seek to consider the importance that many schools, colleges and universities place upon detailed reading lists and establishing core texts (i.e. the teaching of the course you are studying will largely be based upon those books your teachers feel provide a suitable accompaniment to the subject you are studying) for your course for improving yours studies. Therefore, this article seeks to offer some general hints and tips on purchasing the textbooks that you need to enhance your chances of success.

With this in mind, whilst it is undeniably unfortunate, the reality is that when looking to obtain your textbooks you need to appreciate schools, colleges and university libraries only ever stock a certain number of textbooks by any given author for any particular subject. As a result, it is quite likely a textbook that your subject teachers look upon as being of particular importance for any assessment will be in great demand as deadline day approaches so as to only further emphasise the importance of starting your coursework assignments early.

On this basis, you may find it worth your while to invest in the most important of these textbooks either at the student bookshop on campus at your college, university or at a retailer like Waterstones. However, this does not mean your budget for the semester or even the entire year needs to be completely drained overnight. Therefore, a good starting place for purchasing your books, particularly the further you go in higher education, is the university bookshop that may offer prices marginally lower than the high street and specialise in your university’s subjects.

Your college or university Student Union may also offer students like you a tetbook exchange service where, once you have finished with a textbook, you can then sell these textbooks on via your college or university Student Union who will take a small cut. Moreover, purchasing textbooks on-line has also become a major growth industry as both Amazon and BOL (‘Books Online’) allow you to buy second-hand books which is great for students at college or university, whilst Abebooks also allows you to buy or sell a book directly at a fixed cost which is very good for your bank balance on both counts (found on Google or any other search engine)!

In addition, if you choose to purchase second hand books from any of the sources I have identified, please BE AWARE that your subject teachers at your college or university may want you to have the most up to date editions because the information in earlier editions may be out of date. Therefore, I would advise you to check with a teacher before you consider purchasing any second hand books for your college or university course.

However, if you do purchase books from a first-hand retailer, do not be afraid to ask for a discount if you are purchasing a number of educational titles for your college or university course – you will usually get up to 10% OFF with your NUS (national Union of Students) Card in the UK – and you may find that if the price is still high you could get a further discount if you pay with cash by saying something like –

“I want these books, but on the Internet I could save £X, I want to buy them now, can you do the same?”

REMEMBER - It is ALWAYS a good idea to ask because you could save money since academic books are NOT usually most book stores biggest sellers!

Therefore, if you would like a great deal more information and support in both this and other areas then you can find it in the form of the e-journal 'The Secret Guide To Academic Writing & Study' that I produced myself and am currently distributing to students like you all over the world at a remarkably inexpensive one-off price through my website at www.academicfx.co.uk.

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Herman White" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'herman-white/91008">Herman White

It is a fact that there are many students who find it extremely difficult to manage their expenses with the start of a new academic year. This usually happens due to the high price of textbooks. Since all these books are required to continue the year, students have to pay a high price for these textbooks.

Almost all students have to go through this issue, except of those few who use another way to get these textbooks. This way is to get used textbooks at much lower price. In fact, it is found in many researches that some students become able to get these used books at 75% discount. Isn’t it amazing?

It surely is amazing, and it is due to the introduction of those sites that deal in these used textbooks. With these companies and sites coming into being, it has become much easier for college students to get their textbooks without spending a fortune. Actually, these companies work for students and work due to students. It is a two-way traffic in reality. Basically, these companies are to abridge the gap between students who want to buy books and students who want to sell it.

There are many students who know they can save a lot of money by selling their used textbooks. These are the few who know there is no use of letting your books to hang out with dust bunnies. They know they need to free up some premium real estate on their bookshelf and that’s why they sell it. By selling their books, they actually get their new books for free. It is so because they get some money for selling their old books and get books for next year at extremely low rate. When compared to new books, this seems like they have bought these text books for free.

However, there are few things that students have to keep in mind before buying or selling used textbooks. When selling your books, it is important to make sure you get the best price for it. You have to get as much as you can, and it is possible only when you compare few online sites for their services. On the other hand, if you are going to buy used textbooks, you should make sure you pay a right price for these books. Also, you need to check that these textbooks are exactly what you want. Sometimes, there might be a change in content in new books that has to be taken into consideration.

So, the fact of the matter is that buying text books is an expensive proposition for students, but they can always save a lot of money just by opting for used textbooks. But, you should always take some time to find a right site to buy or sell, as it is important for all.

Programs Initiated to Bring Down College Textbooks Prices Author:

Programs Initiated to Bring Down College Textbooks Prices

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Groshan Fabiola" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'groshan-fabiola/3710">Groshan Fabiola

Today's college textbooks are undoubtedly unaffordable for many categories of students who study in superior educational establishments throughout the United States. The overall prices of curriculum-required, extensively used college textbooks are rising continuously, determining increasingly larger numbers of students to stop attending to classes and even turn away from college and university for good. According to statistics, college textbook prices haven't ceased to rise since 1986, the costs of such products tripling over the last two decades. Recent estimates also indicate that students at four-year schools spent around $900 for their required textbooks and other similar study materials over the period of the 2003-2004 school year. Due to the exaggerated costs of college textbooks, more than 60 percent of students in the United States can't afford to buy all the course materials they need, and thus fail to pass their exams and even fail to graduate from school.

Although they haven't paid the right attention to the phenomenon in the past, government representatives and faculty chairmen have recently initiated various projects that focus entirely on reducing the prices of college books. Hoping to put an end to the pronounced crisis behind college textbooks, state legislators are also currently developing new sets of specific laws that aim to bring down the prices of study materials. This year, more than 40 bills and resolutions will be gradually introduced in around 15 states. According to the National Association of College Stores, other states have also promised to take proper action in order to make textbooks affordable to all categories of students.

States are following various approaches in their effort to cut down the prices of college textbooks, developing different solutions according to their available resources. For instance, the states of New Jersey and Illinois have initiated multiple rental programs, while the states of New York and Maryland are focusing on exempting the prices of college textbooks from the local sales tax. In addition, the government has decreed that all state faculties respect a series of norms and regulations. Thus, the state of Virginia doesn't allow college and university faculties to accept publisher interests, the state of Washington imposes school faculty chairmen to only use low-price study materials, and the state of Connecticut imposes that college textbooks publishers disclose the prices of such materials to faculties.

While these initiatives have been successfully embraced in some American states, certain faculty chairmen find the solutions provided by the government inefficient and offensive, stating that the laws should primarily target textbook publishers, not faculties. However, due to the existing set of interstate commerce laws, legislators can't directly sanction publishers and try to solve the costs problem by requiring faculties to respect certain specific rules instead. Furthermore, government representatives have stated that the recently proposed programs and initiatives are only temporary, as it is very difficult to find a permanent solution for the problem of high college textbook prices in present. Perhaps the following months will bring better prospects in taking care of these issues once and for all.

Education is expensive enough without posh dorm rooms with king-size beds and plasma TVs. The campus bookstore alone can turn a wallet into a black hole. According to a study by the Government Accountability Office, college textbook prices have risen at twice the rate of inflation over the past 20 years. A study by the National Association of College Stores Foundation found that 65% of students aren't purchasing all their required course materials.

Students just lost one excuse for not reading if their teachers assign books by Freeload Press. The company offers free downloads of e-textbooks written by notable, previously published academic authors. Students can also order a printed textbook for 50-60% less than competitive textbooks. These free books are made possible through embedded advertisements by companies including Discover Card, Price Waterhouse Coopers, and the College Loan Corporation.

Freeload Press is a 4-year-old company with a growing number of higher education textbooks in multiple disciplines, geared toward first or second year courses where textbooks are traditionally the most expensive. CEO Tom Doran projects that in the near future, Freeload Press will substantially expand in the areas of business, social sciences, and sciences.

Some critics argue that embedded advertisements give textbooks a less than scholarly appearance. Proponents of the Freeload textbook model are quick to point out that advertisements appear everywhere today, from campus kiosks to Internet pop-ups. Furthermore, the advertisements are strategically placed at the beginning or end of chapters, so as not to distract the reader. Most importantly, though, is the fact that Freeload Press books are written by credible authors with a preexisting readership, and go through a similar developmental process as traditional textbooks. It's the distribution that's different.

Currently, 200 instructors are assigning Freeload Press books from institutions across the U.S., ranging from small community colleges to renowned institutions including Carnegie Mellon and the University of Michigan. Even some U.S.-based study abroad programs and overseas military bases are using the products. Altogether, students from over 1,900 colleges have downloaded Freeload Press books, whether required by their instructors or for their own benefit as supplemental reading. After experiencing the product, many users return to the Freeload Press Web site to leave a comment expressing their gratitude.

How to Close the Best Deal When Buying College Textbooks

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Groshan Fabiola" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'groshan-fabiola/3710">Groshan Fabiola

The costs of curricular college textbooks have risen considerably in the last few years, requiring college and university students to spend exorbitant sums of money simply to enter in possession of a minimum number of topical course materials each semester. Each school year, the average student is forced to spend up to $500 on new college textbooks in order to be able to continue one's education.

Although there are many campus bookstores that offer students the opportunity to purchase used college textbooks at smaller prices, the discounts prepared by such offline resources are most often insignificant. Students who decide to buy used textbooks from the college bookstore are often surprised to see that they only economize a few bucks when making their purchases from such used textbook resources. At best, college students who buy all their curriculum-required study materials from used college bookstores rather than new bookstores are offered a 10 percent discount, a very small favor considering that many of these used college textbooks are out of date or in a deplorable condition.

Certain college bookstores convince students to buy college textbooks from such places by offering them the chance to sell back their study materials at the end of the semester or school year. However, students who do so are rarely able to sell their college textbooks at more than 5 to 10 percent of the original price! Even the most optimistic students can't hope to sell back a new or used college textbook worth $80 for more than $8. In the worst case whatsoever, students may not be offered a dime when they try to valorize their college textbooks at the end of the semester. Due to these reasons, lots of students have recently turned away from campus bookstores, looking for cheaper ways of obtaining their required textbooks, such as buying online.

At present, the Internet is virtually saturated with online bookstores and similar online resources that establish very low, affordable prices for college textbooks. In order to ensure that you will make the best online purchase, the trick is to carefully analyze the offer and find the website that can service your needs and requirements in the most convenient way possible. Popular online college bookstores and similar online resources offer an entire series of advantages to students who decide to make their purchases from such places: extensive offer (students sometimes have better chances of finding rare college textbooks online rather than offline); very low prices (compared to campus bookstores, online resources make substantial discounts to students); possibility of selling back the purchased study materials at decent prices (students can sell back their college textbooks at up to 40-50 percent of the original price); you can order at any time of day; fast delivery and low shipping costs.

Competitive college textbook-offering websites allow students to search their required books by title, author, keyword or ISBN code. This way, finding the books you are interested in is simple and efficient. Once you find your desired textbooks, you can purchase them at the established price (some online resources even allow you to negotiate prices) and they will be delivered to you at home. The average delivery time of college textbook online resources is 10 business days; with a bit of luck, you can enter in possession of your books even sooner.

Shipping costs are usually low, and students who make more substantial orders don't require paying shipping costs at all. When you don't need the purchased college textbooks anymore, you can sell back these materials at up to 50 percent of the original price. Some websites have even better policies: if the textbooks you are selling back are in perfect condition, you have the freedom to decide your own price! This way you can actually try to sell your study materials at higher prices than the original costs.
