Author: <a target="_blank" title="Herman White" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'herman-white/91008">Herman White

It is a fact that there are many students who find it extremely difficult to manage their expenses with the start of a new academic year. This usually happens due to the high price of textbooks. Since all these books are required to continue the year, students have to pay a high price for these textbooks.

Almost all students have to go through this issue, except of those few who use another way to get these textbooks. This way is to get used textbooks at much lower price. In fact, it is found in many researches that some students become able to get these used books at 75% discount. Isn’t it amazing?

It surely is amazing, and it is due to the introduction of those sites that deal in these used textbooks. With these companies and sites coming into being, it has become much easier for college students to get their textbooks without spending a fortune. Actually, these companies work for students and work due to students. It is a two-way traffic in reality. Basically, these companies are to abridge the gap between students who want to buy books and students who want to sell it.

There are many students who know they can save a lot of money by selling their used textbooks. These are the few who know there is no use of letting your books to hang out with dust bunnies. They know they need to free up some premium real estate on their bookshelf and that’s why they sell it. By selling their books, they actually get their new books for free. It is so because they get some money for selling their old books and get books for next year at extremely low rate. When compared to new books, this seems like they have bought these text books for free.

However, there are few things that students have to keep in mind before buying or selling used textbooks. When selling your books, it is important to make sure you get the best price for it. You have to get as much as you can, and it is possible only when you compare few online sites for their services. On the other hand, if you are going to buy used textbooks, you should make sure you pay a right price for these books. Also, you need to check that these textbooks are exactly what you want. Sometimes, there might be a change in content in new books that has to be taken into consideration.

So, the fact of the matter is that buying text books is an expensive proposition for students, but they can always save a lot of money just by opting for used textbooks. But, you should always take some time to find a right site to buy or sell, as it is important for all.

Programs Initiated to Bring Down College Textbooks Prices

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Groshan Fabiola" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'groshan-fabiola/3710">Groshan Fabiola

Today's college textbooks are undoubtedly unaffordable for many categories of students who study in superior educational establishments throughout the United States. The overall prices of curriculum-required, extensively used college textbooks are rising continuously, determining increasingly larger numbers of students to stop attending to classes and even turn away from college and university for good. According to statistics, college textbook prices haven't ceased to rise since 1986, the costs of such products tripling over the last two decades. Recent estimates also indicate that students at four-year schools spent around $900 for their required textbooks and other similar study materials over the period of the 2003-2004 school year. Due to the exaggerated costs of college textbooks, more than 60 percent of students in the United States can't afford to buy all the course materials they need, and thus fail to pass their exams and even fail to graduate from school.

Although they haven't paid the right attention to the phenomenon in the past, government representatives and faculty chairmen have recently initiated various projects that focus entirely on reducing the prices of college books. Hoping to put an end to the pronounced crisis behind college textbooks, state legislators are also currently developing new sets of specific laws that aim to bring down the prices of study materials. This year, more than 40 bills and resolutions will be gradually introduced in around 15 states. According to the National Association of College Stores, other states have also promised to take proper action in order to make textbooks affordable to all categories of students.

States are following various approaches in their effort to cut down the prices of college textbooks, developing different solutions according to their available resources. For instance, the states of New Jersey and Illinois have initiated multiple rental programs, while the states of New York and Maryland are focusing on exempting the prices of college textbooks from the local sales tax. In addition, the government has decreed that all state faculties respect a series of norms and regulations. Thus, the state of Virginia doesn't allow college and university faculties to accept publisher interests, the state of Washington imposes school faculty chairmen to only use low-price study materials, and the state of Connecticut imposes that college textbooks publishers disclose the prices of such materials to faculties.

While these initiatives have been successfully embraced in some American states, certain faculty chairmen find the solutions provided by the government inefficient and offensive, stating that the laws should primarily target textbook publishers, not faculties. However, due to the existing set of interstate commerce laws, legislators can't directly sanction publishers and try to solve the costs problem by requiring faculties to respect certain specific rules instead. Furthermore, government representatives have stated that the recently proposed programs and initiatives are only temporary, as it is very difficult to find a permanent solution for the problem of high college textbook prices in present. Perhaps the following months will bring better prospects in taking care of these issues once and for all.

Education is expensive enough without posh dorm rooms with king-size beds and plasma TVs. The campus bookstore alone can turn a wallet into a black hole. According to a study by the Government Accountability Office, college textbook prices have risen at twice the rate of inflation over the past 20 years. A study by the National Association of College Stores Foundation found that 65% of students aren't purchasing all their required course materials.

Students just lost one excuse for not reading if their teachers assign books by Freeload Press. The company offers free downloads of e-textbooks written by notable, previously published academic authors. Students can also order a printed textbook for 50-60% less than competitive textbooks. These free books are made possible through embedded advertisements by companies including Discover Card, Price Waterhouse Coopers, and the College Loan Corporation.

Freeload Press is a 4-year-old company with a growing number of higher education textbooks in multiple disciplines, geared toward first or second year courses where textbooks are traditionally the most expensive. CEO Tom Doran projects that in the near future, Freeload Press will substantially expand in the areas of business, social sciences, and sciences.

Some critics argue that embedded advertisements give textbooks a less than scholarly appearance. Proponents of the Freeload textbook model are quick to point out that advertisements appear everywhere today, from campus kiosks to Internet pop-ups. Furthermore, the advertisements are strategically placed at the beginning or end of chapters, so as not to distract the reader. Most importantly, though, is the fact that Freeload Press books are written by credible authors with a preexisting readership, and go through a similar developmental process as traditional textbooks. It's the distribution that's different.

Currently, 200 instructors are assigning Freeload Press books from institutions across the U.S., ranging from small community colleges to renowned institutions including Carnegie Mellon and the University of Michigan. Even some U.S.-based study abroad programs and overseas military bases are using the products. Altogether, students from over 1,900 colleges have downloaded Freeload Press books, whether required by their instructors or for their own benefit as supplemental reading. After experiencing the product, many users return to the Freeload Press Web site to leave a comment expressing their gratitude.

How to Close the Best Deal When Buying College Textbooks Author:

How to Close the Best Deal When Buying College Textbooks

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Groshan Fabiola" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'groshan-fabiola/3710">Groshan Fabiola

The costs of curricular college textbooks have risen considerably in the last few years, requiring college and university students to spend exorbitant sums of money simply to enter in possession of a minimum number of topical course materials each semester. Each school year, the average student is forced to spend up to $500 on new college textbooks in order to be able to continue one's education.

Although there are many campus bookstores that offer students the opportunity to purchase used college textbooks at smaller prices, the discounts prepared by such offline resources are most often insignificant. Students who decide to buy used textbooks from the college bookstore are often surprised to see that they only economize a few bucks when making their purchases from such used textbook resources. At best, college students who buy all their curriculum-required study materials from used college bookstores rather than new bookstores are offered a 10 percent discount, a very small favor considering that many of these used college textbooks are out of date or in a deplorable condition.

Certain college bookstores convince students to buy college textbooks from such places by offering them the chance to sell back their study materials at the end of the semester or school year. However, students who do so are rarely able to sell their college textbooks at more than 5 to 10 percent of the original price! Even the most optimistic students can't hope to sell back a new or used college textbook worth $80 for more than $8. In the worst case whatsoever, students may not be offered a dime when they try to valorize their college textbooks at the end of the semester. Due to these reasons, lots of students have recently turned away from campus bookstores, looking for cheaper ways of obtaining their required textbooks, such as buying online.

At present, the Internet is virtually saturated with online bookstores and similar online resources that establish very low, affordable prices for college textbooks. In order to ensure that you will make the best online purchase, the trick is to carefully analyze the offer and find the website that can service your needs and requirements in the most convenient way possible. Popular online college bookstores and similar online resources offer an entire series of advantages to students who decide to make their purchases from such places: extensive offer (students sometimes have better chances of finding rare college textbooks online rather than offline); very low prices (compared to campus bookstores, online resources make substantial discounts to students); possibility of selling back the purchased study materials at decent prices (students can sell back their college textbooks at up to 40-50 percent of the original price); you can order at any time of day; fast delivery and low shipping costs.

Competitive college textbook-offering websites allow students to search their required books by title, author, keyword or ISBN code. This way, finding the books you are interested in is simple and efficient. Once you find your desired textbooks, you can purchase them at the established price (some online resources even allow you to negotiate prices) and they will be delivered to you at home. The average delivery time of college textbook online resources is 10 business days; with a bit of luck, you can enter in possession of your books even sooner.

Shipping costs are usually low, and students who make more substantial orders don't require paying shipping costs at all. When you don't need the purchased college textbooks anymore, you can sell back these materials at up to 50 percent of the original price. Some websites have even better policies: if the textbooks you are selling back are in perfect condition, you have the freedom to decide your own price! This way you can actually try to sell your study materials at higher prices than the original costs.

How Much Can You Make When You Sell Textbooks?

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Terro White" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'terro-white/102512">Terro White

You have probably heard about the concept of selling used textbooks online. The real question on everybody’s minds is how much can you really make when you sell textbooks? The fact of the matter is that the amount that you will be able earn is going to vary according to a number of different aspects.

First and foremost the kind of textbooks that you have in possession is an important factor that will determine its worth. For example a special edition of a particular series of a book may be valued more than the conventional issue. Similarly rare manuals such as instructor’s guides and student manuals may be worth more than conventional course textbooks. In its essence the higher the demand and the more limited the supply of the textbook the higher price it is likely to yield for you.

This is not to say that you cannot make money by selling your course books. In fact course books are always in demand. However they will not be as highly priced as the other rare textbooks that are in demand. The exclusiveness of a book is not the only factor that determines its value rather the particular condition in which it is available will also have a profound impact on the price that you will be able to sell the book at.

The general rule is the better the condition of your textbook the higher its price will be set. In general there are two categories within which textbooks are classified. Those books that have been maintained in tip top condition are classified as new and are highly valued. Those that show some signs of obvious damage and use are classified as new. There are some books that fall below this level and if the company finds them still usable they may buy them at half the estimated price.

When you give away your books to sell you will be required to grade them yourself. However when you ship them over they will be graded in person by the company itself. Hence it may not always be the case that the company assigns the exact same grade that you have assigned. Rather they are likely to evaluate its worth realistically. You will receive the payment according to the finalized grade by the company.

Such services are highly versatile. You can sell a single textbook and also have the opportunity to sell in bulk. The best thing about selling textbooks online is the fact that you do not have to pay for shipping. If you did it would totally outweigh your earnings. As it is shipping has been made incredibly easy in today’s times.

Irrespective of whether you make a dollar or a few hundred dollars this is the best way to get rid of your used books and earn money while doing so. Furthermore by doing so you are keeping the momentum of selling and buying used books in the flow and the next time you need to buy textbooks you can buy them at discounted prices from the same source.

Do students really get the most possible value out of their textbook purchases? To many college and university students, textbooks are meant to be bought, utilized, and sold. This process is intuitive, but is it the best for students? The answer is, probably not. Students buy textbooks for as much as $200, use them for less than four months, and resell them to campus bookstores to regain roughly a mere thirty-five percent of the purchase price.

Many website services have been established to compete with campus bookstores for a slice of the used textbook markets. While these services provide better buyback prices than campus stores, these services fail to give students anywhere near the maximum value of their books, often reselling used books at considerably higher prices. Consequently, these textbook buyback services are comparable to traditional campus bookstores.

Yet, another type of internet textbook service is one that creates marketplaces for people to buy and sell textbooks. However, these marketplace services often charge a hefty commission fee to sellers. The fee can be as much as eighteen percent of the textbook value, thereby taking a considerable chunk of the seller’s proceeds. Moreover, many of the textbook sellers on these marketplace services are bookstores that resell used books at marked up prices. Therefore, marketplace services can have the same disadvantages for students as the campus bookstore model.

The best possible textbook exchange service for students is one that creates an environment where only students may participate. This ensures that students retain the maximum value of their textbooks by directly exchanging books with each other.

Textlister.com creates such an environment for students and goes a step further by providing a system for students to trade textbooks without the need to exchange money. Textbook trading services designed solely for student use give college and university students the best value for their textbooks.

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Art Gib" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'art-gib/40689">Art Gib

When I was in college, I was lucky enough to have a couple of scholarships that covered my tuition and lodging expenses during my first two years. As an eighteen year old (naive and clueless), I thought I had it made. However I forgot about the kryptonite of all college students -- textbooks.

Textbook prices on college campus are reaching a level of ridiculousness that should be reserved for hotel mini-bars and posh Beverly Hills clothing stores. Ok, perhaps I'm being a bit facetious, but having worked in a college bookstore during my freshman year, I am all too aware of the drastic mark-up implemented by bookstores.

The selling and reselling of books is a major income source for colleges and universities. Professors are often pressured by schools to assign books. Savvy professors, being that they have a vested interest in helping the school they work for make money, have gotten pretty good at assigning books that are difficult to obtain (other than at the university bookstore) or require the latest edition, printed just a few months earlier of course, preventing anybody from getting the same book anywhere else (former students for example).

The biggest problem is that students can hardly boycott buying textbooks in order to save money. Most college professors don't assign textbooks unless they intend to use them. Therefore students are backed into a corner, so to speak, forcing them to either spend the hundreds of dollars on the books or go without.

In the 21st century, websites like Half.com, Amazon.com and Alibris have become leading resellers for used textbooks in the online space. Providing used textbooks and a dramatically lower cost has driven competition and lead to the preliminary fall of the traditional college bookstore.

Saving on Textbooks with Book Rentals

Now there is a new contender in the marketplace. In the spirit of Netflix and GameFly comes online textbook rental companies that may change the face of how students get textbooks. Applying a very similar system to books as Netflix uses for movies, online book-rental companies typically charge students a flat fee for up to one semester's use of a textbook, at the end of which the books are returned to the warehouse.

Textbook rental companies provides the shipping both ways, so there are no hidden handling fees. Intuitive online interfaces make it simple to shop for the textbooks you need by title, author, subject or ISBN. This is a quick, easy, and affordable way to find the book rentals you need, avoid the long lines, and save money on your college education.

What Can You Do With Used Textbooks?

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Terro White" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'terro-white/102512">Terro White

Did you know you could make money with your used books? That’s right, you can sell your used books to online specialists that are always on the look out to acquire used books and add them into their collection. Such organizations deal in buying and selling textbooks which helps to facilitate people looking for specific textbooks at bargain prices and those looking to get rid of theirs.

Selling your textbooks is a far better alternative to recycling them. This is because there are many people that require the books that may be of no use to you anymore. Plus it opens up an avenue for you to make money with some thing that you might have to dispose of otherwise.

The most common question when it comes to selling textbooks is what kind of textbooks can you sell online to make money? Well, there is an extensive list of textbooks that you can sell which includes laboratory manuals, student solutions manual, study guides, working papers, instructor’s editions, loose leaf editions and used international and Canadian editions. The list of books that you can offer may vary according to the service provider. But the above mentioned ones are standard books that are accepted by such organizations.

So how much money can you make by selling your textbooks? It is important to understand that organizations that are interested in buying your textbooks have a grading system according to which they gauge the quality of your book. Your book may be termed as new, used or destroyed.

In order for your book to be categorized as new it should be in near perfect condition. This necessitates that it does not have a broken spine nor any frayed corners, dents, scratches, stains or tears. If your book has minor scratches and dents on the cover then it will be categorized as a used book. Similarly if the cover is intact but has been frayed and bent then it will be termed as used. Not more than 25% of the inner pages should be wrinkled. Ideally there should be minimal highlighting and writing on the pages. However there should be no torn pages in the book.

In certain conditions you may be able to sell textbooks at half the estimated price. This is in cases where the cover and the inside have minor stains upon them. Similarly if more than 25% of the inner books are wrinkled and five or less pages have been torn even then you can sell your used textbooks for half their estimated price.

Books that have been destroyed by excessive staining, mildew and mold on the cover and the inside, and have missing pages are not eligible to be sold. Similarly if a part of the cover is torn and the book has obscured text then it is not worth anything. In its essence you can make money by selling your used textbooks unless they have become really old or you have severely mistreated them. Other than that this is an excellent money making opportunity that anybody can avail.

Innovative Solutions for Reducing the Costs of College Textbooks Author:

Innovative Solutions for Reducing the Costs of College Textbooks

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Groshan Fabiola" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'groshan-fabiola/3710">Groshan Fabiola

The issues raised by the increasingly higher prices of college textbooks have drawn the attention of many parties, hundreds of faculty chairmen and government representatives nationwide currently working as a team in an attempt to find appropriate solutions for the disproportionate costs of today's student study materials. However, the most efficient and applicable solution to the crisis has been proposed by an unexpected category: online publishers. Their approach to the problem has surprised everyone through its simplicity and practicality, being quickly embraced by both faculty leaders, government authorities and other competent parties.

This recently presented solution basically consists in publishing college textbooks online and relying on advertisers to drag down the costs of such study materials. In theory, this method could actually be considered infallible, as both students and Internet advertisers would greatly benefit from the process: students would be able to purchase their college textbooks online, in exchange for considerably smaller fees, while advertisers would achieve great exposure and popularity for their brands, thus increasing their profits.

The method described by online advertisers basically acts like this: advertisers cover the costs of publishing online college textbooks, while students purchase these ad-containing online textbooks instead of their more expensive counterparts and thus become the targeted market segment for various advertising agencies. Seen through this perspective, the college textbooks of tomorrow will be available under the form of software products and will contain various advertisements. The advertising campaigns promoted with the means of online college textbooks will be fully customizable, accounting for the features required by brand owners and advertisers.

Ads can contain static images, video and audio and can be easily attached to the sponsors' websites. In fact, they can even be interactive, enabling video or taking users to a series of websites or other online resources. These advertisements can be placed at the beginning and ending of a book chapter, at the index, summary, homework section, as well as at the very end of the textbook. The ads can belong to multiple sponsoring online advertising agencies or a single sponsor, taking various shapes according to advertisers' specifications. These types of ads can also be easily included in print versions of e-college textbooks available for purchase both online and offline (in traditional bookstores).

At present, the main college textbook topics chosen by online advertisers are: accounting, financial management, mathematics, computer applications and psychology. Sponsors may later decide to cover up other topics too if the initiative achieves the expected result.

In addition to regularly used, curriculum-required college textbooks, other study materials such as course supplements, supplementary readings and laboratories may also be sponsored by online advertising companies. At first, the advertisements can be introduced locally, in randomly chosen schools from the US, in order to test the efficiency of the method. If the initiative proves to be successful, it can later be applied on a national basis, targeting educational establishments nationwide. Although the project is still under development, online advertisers are very optimistic, already taking pride in having found an effective solution for bringing down the prices of college textbooks.

There has been a lot of hype about the Amazon Kindle electronic reader. The device allows users to download up to 1500 books in less than 60 seconds. Amazon has dropped the price of the Kindle 2 from $359 U.S. to $299 U.S. Does this price drop now put the Kindle within reach of college students budgets?

First of all, the idea of electronic books is a great one. E-books save trees and the backs of students lugging those extra heavy backpacks. Kindle owners can download most new books at a price of $9.99 which is a considerable savings from new hardbook releases. Unfortuately, the large size of textbooks is not very compatible with the design of the Kindle. To accomodate the larger size of textbooks, the Kindle DX is the recommended device. Naturally, the larger size screen of the Kindle DX (9.7 inches vs. 6 inches for the Kindle 2) brings with it a larger price tag as well. The DX version of the Kindle sells for $489, which is not an inexpensive investment for the college student. It does, however, have the capacity to store up to 3500 books.

But one obstacle that the Kindle has not overcome yet is that it does not yet have color capacity--all type and pictures are reproduced in grey scale. While this is not a problem for a novel for your English class, it is a definite drawback for science classes. Can you imagine trying to study musculature for your anatomy class when everything is rendered in gray?

So while the Kindle is an idea whose time has come, I would not purchase one with the intention of downloading textbooks just yet. A $489 price tag for the DX model is still very pricey, and I am willing to bet that within the next year or so more improvements such as the ability to render pages in color will come to the technology. I would wait on these improvements and further drops in price before I would invest in the Kindle.

If you are interested in e-textbook options, or options for cheaper textbooks in general, please see my earlier posts on textbooks options, here and here.
