Is Wikipedia a Viable Source for College Papers?

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Ben Welch" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'ben-welch/24830">Ben Welch

As a college writing instructor, I can vouch that there are certain questions that come up again and again during the course of every writing class. Questions include:

When do I use "then" and when do I use "than"?
How do I write a good thesis statement?
Where do I put the page numbers?

Then there are more general questions, such as:

Do you always have to start class on time and end class on time?
Is there anyone else who teaches this course?
You're married. Really? You? (Often followed by a "That poor woman" muttered under their breath.)

But perhaps the most common question I get is whether Wikipedia, the ubiquitous online encyclopedia, can be used as a viable source for research papers. In response to this question, I try to explain how academic discourse works - I talk about accuracy, credibility, objectivity, peer-reviewing, and the like. Most of the time, students just stare at me blankly and say, "So... ah... is that a no?"

As such, I've been searching for a better response, one that I hope will finally put to rest this question, which has been lurking in the halls of academia and feeding on the unsuspecting brains of my students like a zombie from one of the old Simpson's Halloween Specials. At long last, I think I finally found the answer, which was provided by, of all people, the founder of Wikipedia.com, Jimmy Wales. To quote from The Chronicle of Higher Education:

Speaking at a conference at the University of Pennsylvania on Friday called "The Hyperlinked Society," Mr. Wales said that he gets about 10 e-mail messages a week from students who complain that Wikipedia has gotten them into academic hot water. "They say, 'Please help me. I got an F on my paper because I cited Wikipedia'" and the information turned out to be wrong, he says. But he said he has no sympathy for their plight, noting that he thinks to himself: "For God sake, you're in college; don't cite the encyclopedia."

Mr. Wales goes on to say that Wikipedia is good for getting a general overview for a subject but notes that academic papers should draw from real sources - you know, like the kind you find in the library.

There it is - straight from the horse's mouth - Wikipedia is not a viable source for college papers. Thus, I think it's finally time that students and educators accept the fact that serious academic discussions must be conducted in serious academic forums. Websites like Wikipedia simply cannot function as the means for conveying crucial information on scholarly topics.

There has never been a better time to pursue an online college degree, despite the turmoil in the economy and the job market. With an online degree program, you\'ll be able to maintain a full-time job and perhaps even raise a family, and still expand your educational acumen. Add the option of potentially obtaining a scholarship, and the possibilities are limitless. Here are a few tips to help you settle into great study habits as you work toward your degree.

1. Chances are that you\'ll have many different courses with homework for each of them, so investing in different-colored folders and notebooks is a good idea. Label each with the course\'s name and your own name, of course. The papers inside each folder should be placed neatly in chronological order to make current projects easier to locate.

2. Study at the same time every day, perhaps with a partner. Be careful not to lapse into conversation instead of focusing on your schoolwork. Keeping a \"vow of silence\" once you get started will help you to absorb the material more effectively.

3. Note-taking may seem like a small matter, but doing it effectively is critical as you study for your online degree. It is also a great skill to parlay into your \"real life\" after you obtain your degree, since it will mean you know how to break down any topic to its most basic elements so you can absorb it thoroughly.

4. Prudent study habits really take root while you are in the classroom, even if yours is a virtual one. If you don\'t understand the material, you have every right to ask questions of the instructor. Despite the fact that your course is not in-person, your professor is there to help you with your goal of securing an online college degree. This is a course that you\'ve paid for, so now is the time to ask the expert and get your money\'s worth.

5. One of the hardest things to do is to tell your friends you are busy studying, but your online college education must take precedence over such distractions right now. Tell them that you will catch up with them after you finish studying, and then stick to your guns. Your true friends will understand how important it is that you complete your degree, and should encourage you toward that goal.

Giving attention to how effectively you manage your study time can be key to getting what you want out of your education. Staying focused on your goals as you do your work can make it easier to avoid distractions. Creating study habits that work for you will be beneficial during your school years and in your life even after you earn your degree.

Online Education - Do You Want to Return to School?

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Jeanna Foy-Stanley" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'jeanna-foy-stanley/59167">Jeanna Foy-Stanley

In our rapidly changing global world, millions of students are currently taking college-level online (distance education) classes. Private and public universities in the United States and abroad are offering Certificate, Baccalaureate, Masters and Doctoral degree programs over the Internet to adult learners. From Ivy League to Community Colleges, an increasing number of students can log on to their classes from home, work or while commuting by bus and train. Adult learners frequently juggle a myriad of responsibilities including raising children, career, and care giving for senior parents. Formerly, a university of interest may have been out of reach geographically. Presently, an employee located in the United States can register for classes taught half way around the world. Non-traditional venues outside of the more traditional classroom offer viable opportunities for continuing one’s education.

Adult learners make up the largest demographic of post-secondary institutions in the United States. For this student group, the benefits of online academic programs are:

• To update current skill sets

• To learn new skill sets

• To earn an undergraduate or graduate level degree

• The fulfillment of academic requirements necessary for a current job or promotion

• To change careers

• The satisfaction of certification or licensure requirements

• Personal and spiritual growth and development

Not for the faint of heart, success in distance education academic programs requires high levels of stamina, discipline, and motivation. A good candidate must be computer literate, possess the ability to read massive amounts of material in short-time frames, have good writing and communication skills, hold high expectations for good grades, enjoy applying critical thinking and commit a minimum of 15 hours per week per course (be prepared to allocate more, if necessary).

The Internet and the World Wide Web provide the critical technology platform for distance education. University technological and operational infrastructures (including hardware, software and transmission) provide the additional cornerstones to the technology platform needed to execute distance education programs. The delivery of academic content may be accomplished in several formats. The more traditional venues are correspondence courses, videos, audio-cassettes, CD-ROMS, and broadcasts via television and radio. Modern formats include synchronous and/or asynchronous education content distribution channels. Synchronous delivery refers to real-time interaction between instructor and student i.e., two-way video-conferences, whiteboards, chat rooms, telephone software (ex. Skype), and mobile technology devices. Asynchronous interaction does not involve real time communication. Instead, interaction between instructor and student is accomplished through the use of e-mail, DVDs, and the traditional education delivery formats.

As a student, you will need a desktop or laptop computer, an Internet Service provider, a cell phone, software (i.e., word processor, financial spreadsheet, calendar and Power Point), a backup storage disk drive (nothing can make your heart drop faster than losing a body of work that you’ve diligently developed), a headset with microphone for virtual team discussions and the traditional school supplies. Optional technology may include memory upgrades, scanners, digital scanners, and fax machines.

Ten Tips For The Successful Online Student:

• Have a credit card or debit card ready for downloading e-books and other required course reading materials.

• Maintain a list of more than one bookstore in the event that a required textbook is sold out. It’s always a good idea to obtain a list of the required textbooks midway through the term and order in advance for the following term.

• Do not be shy about asking for help if needed. I cannot stress enough the importance of communicating openly with your professor or instructor about course material that you may not understand. Online academic programs tend to move rapidly and course content that you do not understand will most likely cause problems down the road resulting in frustration and possibly, lower grades.

• Seek out a tutor. If there are areas that you know need strengthening, even before the class begins, have a tutor on stand-by. Also, the telephone number of a computer specialist should be in your rolodex.

• Time management will be critical. Keep a planner. Read your syllabus as soon as it becomes available and plan accordingly.

• Uphold your responsibilities as a virtual team member. Your contributions will directly impact the team grade.

• Exercise. Long hours at the computer can cause strain on the neck, shoulder, arm and back muscles, not to mention the hands. Remember to periodically stretch and tone.

• Eat a healthy diet. Keep good healthy recipes handy. Hydrate. Avoid heavy snacking on calorie-laden food and instead eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Avoid white flour and choose high fiber grains.

• See your doctor. A healthy body feeds a healthy mind.

• Stay in contact with your Academic Advisor to be sure that you are satisfying the requirements needed to complete your degree.

In the Fall term of 2006, 3.5 million students representing 20% of all U.S. higher education students, took at least one online course (2007. The Sloan Consortium). It is projected that distance education will continue to grow in popularity domestically and internationally. The most commonly offered online academic programs are Business, Computer Science and Engineering, Education, Engineering, Library Science, Nursing, and Public Health. Whether you select a community college, public institution, private institution or Ivy League university, enjoy the learning experience.

Online college education represents the wave of the future! The jump in adults returning to school has gone from 28% in 1970 to 39% in 2006. Adults participating in educational ventures came to 92 million is 2001 (Statistics may be found at eLearners.com). The largest segment of online education participants is represented by those earning online college degrees. This article will present a summary of degree types, levels, and majors, as well as "10 Predictions for Online Education in 2007."

Four Levels of Online Education College Degrees:

Associate Degrees.

Master's Degrees.

Doctoral Degrees.

Types of Online Education College Degrees & Majors:

These include: physical therapist assistants, dental hygienists, forensic technicians, veterinary technologists and technicians, diagnostic medical sonographers, occupational therapist assistants, cardiovascular technologists and technicians, paralegals and legal assistants. As these jobs require only a two year degree, they are paid well and well respected.

10 Predictions About Online Education in 2007

1. Online education programs will continue to grow and expand. There will be more programs offered online to earn online education degrees and those already offered will expand into more areas of study.

2. Technology will advance. Technology is continually improving and replacing older technologies. Access to online education will speed up and more options will become available to students, such as access to online evaluations of their work, etc.

3. Costs will decrease. As more online education programs evolve, competition will increase, and costs to students will decrease.

4. New degree programs will develop. New degree programs, related to online education will develop. Such programs might include: online student counseling, online education site debate/discussion host, etc.

5. More students will enroll in online education programs. Each year the enrollment in programs continues to increase and will continue to do so. More than 1.6 million students took at least one online course in 2002. In 2003, 1.9 million students took online courses. In 2004, more than 2.3 million students enrolled. In 2005, the number of online learners increased to almost 3.2 million students. (Source: Making the Grade: Online Education in the United States, 2006, Sloan Consortium)

6. Specialized programs will begin to emerge. Students with learning disabilities will be able to take advantage of special online programs created just for them.

7. Attitudes toward higher education will begin to change. The general public will soon see degree programs as accessible to the average person, rather than just the highly intelligent.

8. The time to obtain a degree will shorten. It will take less time to obtain a degree as students will be able to work year-round, at any time of the day or night, transfer courses from other programs, and earn course credit by challenge exams. The minimum amount of time in which degree programs can be completed is two years, but the time it takes to complete a degree varies, depending on prior coursework and whether or not you take time off between courses. Many students complete a degree in two to three years, but it can take four or five years or more, depending on the pace. The more credits transferred, the faster the degree will be completed. You can earn credits from professional training, the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), or previous college courses. (Source: www.uopxworld.edu., "Frequently Asked Questions")

9. Most online colleges will begin to offer course credit for life experience. More credit will be given for life experiences, especially to older students.

10. New programs will begin that are hybrids. New programs will be developed that combine traditional on-campus education with online education or work/online study programs.

Getting an online education college degree is the wave of the future! Use the 10 predictions about online education in this article to begin your search for the online education college degree that is best for you.

Metropolitan College of New York Replaces Semester with Purpose Approach

Metropolitan College of New York located at 431 Canal Street in the New York City and was formerly known as Audrey Cohen College. One of the unique features of the college is the purpose instead of the traditional semester approach for both in campus and online degrees .

Campus Features

Consequent upon reorganization of the college in September 2007, the college consists of Audrey Cohen School for Human Services and Education as well as the School for Management.

Brief History

Founded by Audrey Cohen in 1964 who tried to address dual issues of economic development and social improvements the college was the offshoot of civil rights and women's movements in the 1950s and 60s. Tran's disciplinary model and purpose centered system of education in the college are unique gifts of Cohen. Another notable feature of the college is its policy of supporting nontraditional students.

Unique Features

Instead of the well known semester concept, the college follows a purpose concept. Purpose and constructive action forms integral part of the course work in the college. Course action is a unique seminar of clinical type providing valuable fast hand experience to students. A couple of novel features are the accelerated studies program and the study while working programs offered by the college for its students.

Programs Offered

Presently the college provides both undergraduate as well as graduate programs in human services, education, emergency management, and business. Currently the college offers associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, and master's degrees in multiple disciplines. Details of it can be viewed on their web site on the academic program pages including information about online education .

Accreditation

Accreditation to the college was granted by Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges in 1984, reaffirmed in 1989, 1999 and again in 2010. In 2002 the college was renamed as the Metropolitan College of New York .

Admission

Offering admission in both undergraduate and graduate degree courses, the college provides facilities for students who do not have the GED diploma. Usually an application fee and documents should be attached with the application for admission that can be submitted directly, by mail or online.

Financial Aids

Usually the college has the facilities of Federal and State Grants, scholarships, loans, and tax credits for its students as financial aid. A statistics reveal that nearly 85% of the students avail some kind of financial aids or other. One can visit their financial aid page for details on the issue.

Online Bachelor Degree Courses - How to Find the Best Online Bachelor Degree Courses

Author: <a target="_blank" title="John Maxted" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'john-maxted/103742">John Maxted

When you are working on improving your life, one of the best things that you can do is get a college education. Getting a bachelor degree is very important to your future because without one you are going to be unable to find the highest paying jobs, or advance as far as possible in your career.

A bachelors degree can help you solidify your place in your work environment, and achieve all that is possible for you. However, it can be tough to find that time it takes to drop everything and go back to school which is why online bachelor degree programs are so popular.

Online bachelor degree courses enable you to earn your degree via the internet. You take your courses online, and work independently on the course work. Your classes, assignments and exams are all located on your online site, which offers the opportunity to earn your entire degree without ever having to go to a physical college or university.

This works for many reasons. It allows you to work at your own pace, and to take classes as you have the time and money for them. It also allows you to continue working at your current job, take care of your family responsibilities, and continue doing all of the other things that you need to do in order to enjoy your life.

Another great feature of some online degree programs is that you can also complete them in less time than is possible with a conventional college degree program. Some online schools offer specially designed accelerated online degree programs that make it possible to complete your online degree in two years or less.

Finding the Best Online Bachelor Degree Course For You

Finding the best online bachelor degree courses can be hard, so there are a few things that you will want to do to make sure that you are able to get exactly what you are looking for. First of all, think about the type of program you would like pursue for your online degree courses, and the type of degree you would like to get. Then, research the best online bachelor degree programs that offer that type of degree. After you have completed that, you need to check several things.

Firstly, make sure that the online college or institution you are going to look in to is accredited. An accredited online university or college will give you a degree that will transfer well and be recognized and respected no matter what situation you are in.

Secondly, make sure that they have financial aid available if you choose to use it.

Thirdly, look at the way that the online college operates and see if it meets your needs. For instance, are there online forums, or is it all through email? Are there specific online places you have to be at a specific date and time, like online forums or classes, or can you do all of the work whenever it suits you? What other types of online media technology is being used to facilitate the education process by that particular online college. Do they offer accelerated degree programs?

In order to select the best of the online bachelor degree programs you are considering, you need to make sure that you have looked into the course program and delivery methods and you like what you see. Then, you will feel comfortable knowing that you are happy with the program in general.

It is important not to put off or postpone your research into online bachelor degree programs as the right selection is critical to your success. The sooner you start reading up on the various courses and how they work, the sooner you will have the knowledge required to select and enroll into the online program best suited to you and start your online learning experience. And of course the earlier you get started, the earlier you will graduate and have the qualifications you need to build a successful career in your chosen profession.

In the search to evolve their careers and uncover new opportunities, individuals are always looking to go back to school to finish off their Bachelors Degree. This is the case now more than ever before, with the global recession and a increasingly competitive and crowded marketplace. It can sometimes be forgotten but there is a distict difference between finding the easiest degree that you can and finding something that actually helps you out. This begs the question, is there a worthwhile degree program that remains relatively easy to complete?

What cannot be overlooked is that there is a difference between finding the easiest degree option that\'s worthwhile and just signing up with the easiest thing you can find regardless of its value. Yes, it\'s possible for you today to try to purchase a phony degree for someplace. Or you can attend a quick credit program from an unaccredited university. Both of those options are easy, however they won\'t get you anything. Your Bachelors Degree is more than just a certificate of completion, it signifies all of the value it holds in your eyes and in others\' and it represents all of the knowledge you\'ve gained in your studies.

Therefore your easiest degree option also has to hold real value, and the best available solution is an online or distance learning program. One of these programs is so easy because there are no constraints on when or where you can learn from. Don\'t worry about showing up in a certain city in a certain building at a certain time every day. Instead, fit your schoolwork into your schedule. As long as you complete your assignments then it doesn\'t matter when you do them.

Another great benefit to the distance learning scenario is that you don\'t have to ravel or commute. Commuting not only costs money and takes time, but it\'s also aggravating. Worse than commuting though is realizing you have to completely uproot and move away to go to the school that you want to go to. However, getting your education through an online bachelors degree course allows you to study from any accredited university in the world without traveling, moving or commuting.

The key to advancing your career and giving yourself a better life is also being able to complete your journey quickly. That\'s what the quest for the easiest degree program is really all about it. Well, with an online program you can finish your degree from beginning to end in less time than with any other option. If you choose to pursue an accelerated degree program you can complete your program within two years.

When you feel like your back is against the wall and you\'re stuck in a rut, then go back to school and finish your Bachelors Degree. The easiest degree program that you can find today is based on online education, capitalizing on all of the great advancements in technology in recent years. It\'s easier than ever before and you can be done with the program in less than two years from enrolment, which means you\'re already that much closer to your new and improved career.

Online Education Website Selection - Part 2

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Edward F. Todd, Jr., CPCU, ARM, AIC, MBA" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'edward-f-todd-jr-cpcu-arm-aic-mba/128619">Edward F. Todd, Jr., CPCU, ARM, AIC, MBA

In my last article, we discussed reviewing online course selection and software when considering selection of an online learning website. While course selection and software are important, there are a number of other areas you should consider when selecting a online learning website.

Free Evaluation

While you may have to register or buy a course, make sure there is a free evaluation period and a no questions asked money back guarantee. Working with the product is the best way to evaluate the site. A free online evaluation allows you to see if the site matches your goals and objectives from your Self-Assessment..

Free Courses

Another way to evaluate online education websites is by taking the free online classes, if they are offered. While the online subjects offered for free may be very basic or not quite what you are interested in, working with the product in real time is the best form of evaluation.

Testimonials

While these should not be your sole source upon which to make a decision, you should review these. What do they say? How many can you find? Who is providing them? Testimonials, while many times are self-serving and are provided by the website you are reviewing, will give you an idea of what individuals like about the site and what they found beneficial. Hopefully, the testimonials will highlight areas you identify in your Self-Assessment..

Reviews

Reviews, especially independent reviews, are very beneficial to your decision. Reviews will confirm the quality of the online learning website and talk about the best features the website offers.

Pricing

Does the site offer individual course pricing? Package Pricing? Bulk pricing? Review the pricing structure to ensure it is flexible enough to address any of your learning needs. Of course you should consider pricing and a budget as part of your self-assessment.

If you pick a site using the criteria discussed above and those from Part I, you will not have to worry about picking a bad online learning site.
