Author: <a target="_blank" title="Andrew Douglas" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'andrew-douglas/262391">Andrew Douglas

In this the latest extract from 'The Secret Guide To Academic Writing & Study' I seek to consider the importance that many schools, colleges and universities place upon detailed reading lists and establishing core texts (i.e. the teaching of the course you are studying will largely be based upon those books your teachers feel provide a suitable accompaniment to the subject you are studying) for your course for improving yours studies. Therefore, this article seeks to offer some general hints and tips on purchasing the textbooks that you need to enhance your chances of success.

With this in mind, whilst it is undeniably unfortunate, the reality is that when looking to obtain your textbooks you need to appreciate schools, colleges and university libraries only ever stock a certain number of textbooks by any given author for any particular subject. As a result, it is quite likely a textbook that your subject teachers look upon as being of particular importance for any assessment will be in great demand as deadline day approaches so as to only further emphasise the importance of starting your coursework assignments early.

On this basis, you may find it worth your while to invest in the most important of these textbooks either at the student bookshop on campus at your college, university or at a retailer like Waterstones. However, this does not mean your budget for the semester or even the entire year needs to be completely drained overnight. Therefore, a good starting place for purchasing your books, particularly the further you go in higher education, is the university bookshop that may offer prices marginally lower than the high street and specialise in your university’s subjects.

Your college or university Student Union may also offer students like you a tetbook exchange service where, once you have finished with a textbook, you can then sell these textbooks on via your college or university Student Union who will take a small cut. Moreover, purchasing textbooks on-line has also become a major growth industry as both Amazon and BOL (‘Books Online’) allow you to buy second-hand books which is great for students at college or university, whilst Abebooks also allows you to buy or sell a book directly at a fixed cost which is very good for your bank balance on both counts (found on Google or any other search engine)!

In addition, if you choose to purchase second hand books from any of the sources I have identified, please BE AWARE that your subject teachers at your college or university may want you to have the most up to date editions because the information in earlier editions may be out of date. Therefore, I would advise you to check with a teacher before you consider purchasing any second hand books for your college or university course.

However, if you do purchase books from a first-hand retailer, do not be afraid to ask for a discount if you are purchasing a number of educational titles for your college or university course – you will usually get up to 10% OFF with your NUS (national Union of Students) Card in the UK – and you may find that if the price is still high you could get a further discount if you pay with cash by saying something like –

“I want these books, but on the Internet I could save £X, I want to buy them now, can you do the same?”

REMEMBER - It is ALWAYS a good idea to ask because you could save money since academic books are NOT usually most book stores biggest sellers!

Therefore, if you would like a great deal more information and support in both this and other areas then you can find it in the form of the e-journal 'The Secret Guide To Academic Writing & Study' that I produced myself and am currently distributing to students like you all over the world at a remarkably inexpensive one-off price through my website at www.academicfx.co.uk.

Going back to single mothers is a great thing. They can advanced their career or go into another high paying career. However, money is a major factor when deciding to go back to school. Tuition, housing, and food do not come cheap.

Even though it is quite expensive to get an education, single mothers have options to help pay for it. They can apply for Pell Grants for single mothers, which are government money given to students who are in need.

To apply for the Pell Grants for single mothers, first you have to fill out a FAFSA. You can find this at the FAFSA website where you can either fill out the form electronically or print it out. When filling out FAFSA, you will need to provide your financial situation which includes your income and assets.

Since the Pell Grant is disbursed to students based on their income and assets, the more you make or have, the less money you will get. Also taken into consideration is the income of your parents. This applies if you are still considered an independent.

You do not need to apply separately for the Pell Grant. Everyone that sends in the FAFSA is automatically considered for a Pell Grant.

After you send in your FAFSA, you should receive a SAR. This report will show you a summary of the information that you put on your FAFSA. Look it over carefully for mistakes.

Try to send your FAFSA in early. That way you have a chance to apply to more scholarships too. Scholarships have different deadlines so if you get your FAFSA back too late then you will miss out on some scholarships.

Pell Grants for single mothers is the best way to pay for school. You do not need to repay it like a loan and you do not need to compete with others to get it like scholarships. As long as you meet the criteria, you will get a Pell Grant.

Mandy Chen is a school advisor who has helped numerous students apply for single mother pell grants. To find out further information, please visit her website.

The main types of financial aid for college include student loans, grants, and scholarships. Depending on a college student\'s level of need, he may be offered student loans that, combined with the rest of his financial aid package, cover 100 percent of the cost of college education for all four years of undergraduate school.

Whilst this sounds like a great idea, there can be a number of problems - the first being that loans do need to be repaid. This is why more students nowadays are trying to come up with ways to finish college without having too much debt. The second problem is that students aren\'t getting as much financial aid any more. They usually have to find the money elsewhere, or earn it through working.

Student loans are useful for those students who have been offered some money, or have saved a portion of the money, but don\'t quite have enough to pay for their school fees. Unfortunately, nobody wants to have money owed as soon as they start college. The good news is that a student loan can be deferred if the student is facing hardship - but the debt itself will never go away. Some student loans can never be forgotten, and defaulting on a student loan could even lead to your tax return being taken.

Students who take action to search for financial aid for college will be able to find ways to avoid this student loan debt. When they start to apply for aid, the school may then give them a pack containing what they need to pay through loans, grants and scholarships.

Many students will simply accept the whole package they are offered, including the loans. However, the grants and scholarships are the best option - they simply provide the student with free money that never needs to be repaid. Students will do best to continue searching for more aid to bridge the gap between what they\'ve already been offered and the total they\'ll need to pay.

There are thousands of scholarship programs of which most college students are unaware. Many accept what they\'re offered without looking around for more financial aid for college or without putting enough effort into the search. This is a mistake, however, as there really is something for everyone. There are scholarships for those who earn top grades as well as programs for those who perform community service. Students can find numerous scholarship programs aimed at women and other minorities as well as those for people who are left-handed, very tall, or interested in skateboarding. By researching scholarship programs and applying for as many of them as possible, a student can secure most, if not all, of his financial aid for college as totally free money.

The US government provides personal needs grants to its citizens so that they can use these funds to improve their financial situation. This is a non profit venture and the sole idea behind this is the betterment of the underpaid population. As such, it is quite important to ensure that such grants reach its real targets.

First of all, one should understand the basic difference between a loan and a grant. A loan refers to a certain amount of money provided by a bank to an individual or a company over an agreement to repay the fund within a specific amount of time. On the contrary, a grant is a fund given out by the government to its citizens to alleviate their financial crisis and these need not be paid back.

The US government spends a huge amount on such grant programs. According to the latest data available, an amount exceeding one trillion dollars was allocated under these grant programs. Regular advertisements are also sponsored on various media with a view to educate the people about these facilities. And as a result, more and more people are aware about this today and hence the number of applicants has gone up.

Grants are actually funds provided by the government for citizens who face serious financial hassles. Such grants are highly personalized and one can find a grant for any practical reason that is possible. Extensive researches have been done into the design of these grants and the government has come up with a whole variety of grants to meet any personal financial problem that a citizen might face. They have invested a stupendous one trillion dollar to this venture in the current fiscal year. This is a clear indication of the fact that the government considers this a very serious initiative.

All these grants require the applicants to meet certain criteria set forth by the government. Since they are aimed at the betterment of the people, it is essential that they research more about this and make maximum utilization of these resources. In order to apply for these grants, one should complete certain application forms. They are available at various government offices or you can download them from the internet.

The government has installed this system hoping that this will bring about an improvement in the living standards of those people whose lives are crippled by the huge financial burdens they have incurred. At the same time, they have carefully explained the eligibility criteria for application to these grants. Thus, the government has ensured that these grants will only go to deserving hands. If an individual believes that he satisfies all criteria set forth by the government, he can confidently go ahead with the application.

Such applications should be made in specific application forms available at various governmental organizations. This application process involves filling and producing a lot of documents, therefore an ordinary person might find it toilsome. One can make use of the services of various companies who are experts in setting these documents correctly. They can save you a lot of pain in the end.

Even though the US governments spends such a huge amount of money in these personal needs grants, it is found that there are people who are still ignorant about them. Therefore, the frequency of these advertisements should be increased and also the public should be urged to spread this message. There would definitely be a lot of kind hearts willing to work for this noble cause.

Did you know that the government gives out free grants for small business and that a no credit check loan is easy to get?

If you are in need of supplemental money to help pay for college, Astrive student loans may be what you need in order to get the extra financing you require. Astrive student loans are private loans that were established to help cover the costs of schooling that are not paid for by the standard federally funded financial aid packages.

There are a few ways that you can acquire Astrive student loans. First, you can apply by yourself. In order to do this, you need to have an extremely good credit history that has matured for no less than 26 months. This is typically difficult for young adults to meet, so the majority of individuals making use of Astrive student loans apply through a co-signer.

A co-signer is someone with a good credit rating who is prepared to vouch for you and take the responsibility for your student loan. However, a co-signer must meet a certain list of requirements in order to be eligible.

There are several requirements that you will need to meet in order to be eligible for Astrive student loans. Firstly, you must already know which college you are going to attend. This is important, as Astrive must get in touch with the college and ask for information on the loan process for that specific college. In addition to that, they will ensure that you will be going to that college, and set up the process of fund transfers from Astrive to the college.

Furthermore, Astrive student loans work in a very similar way to how federally funded loans work. For example, there is the same six month grace period associated with federal funding and a very similar process of application. However, unlike federal funding, Astrive student loans are not bound by exactly the same limitations that federal funds are.

Also, federal funding only allows a certain amount per student, while Astrive student loans are more flexible. If your credit rating and history, as well as that of your co-signer, support a higher limit, you can get the limit that you require. This is very useful for those students who are enrolled in famous higher education centers, as these colleges are usually a lot more expensive.

Just like with many financial centers, but unlike federal funding, Astrive student loans applications can be refused for any reason they like. The reasons may range from economic downturns to the possibility that you may not repay the loan. The higher the risk you are, the more chance there is that your application will not be approved.

If you're considering attending college or furthering your education in any field, you may need help paying for your education. Scholarships are a great thing to sign up for because they do not need to be repaid like loans.

This is a guest post from Cami Stombini. Although some of these tips may seem more applicable to students attending college straight out of high-school, her point about many scholarships sitting there unapplied for is very pertinent.

If you're considering attending college or furthering your education in any field, you may need help paying for your education. Scholarships are a great thing to sign up for because they do not need to be repaid like loans.

The price of education has exploded the past few years and without some kind of help many needy students can't afford college. You can find applications for scholarships online, at the campus financial support office, and many services help you sign up for them.

For those who have a specific profession in mind, they may be able to apply for scholarships in that industry. If you want to be a farmer, you could apply for agriculture major related scholarships.

Academic scholarships are simple to apply for and have plenty of competition. You almost certainly need to have really high SAT scores and superb grades to even be given consideration for these.

If you were a jock in high school and played lots of sports, you could also qualify for an athletic scholarship. Student athlete scholarships are hard to qualify for and very rare. Even if you are offered one you must still have good grades to keep it.

Even if your parents are poor, or you come from a low income family, there are still scholarships available to you. In order to be qualified for these type of scholarships, your family has to be low income. There are also a lot of things that administrators look at when awarding need based scholarships. They can be from a few hundred dollars to paying for the entire cost of your education if you are lucky.

Regardless of how much money you have, it's best to sign up for as many scholarships as you can to enhance your possibilities of being awarded one. You cannot be awarded any scholarships unless you apply, so apply for as many as you possibly can.

There are so many scholarships that just sit there and are not ever used because no qualified students even apply. This was especially true before the internet. Nowadays you can fill out applications all day long online in just a few minutes. This might increase your chances of being awarded some educational assistance funding to help pay for your schooling.

Cami has written another interesting and practical article that you can read before you fill out anything online, so be sure to check Cami Stombinis post on scholarships for the rest of this article. For a very short time visit us to get more information about finding the right scholarship for you.

Get a government grant - Having a hard time paying for your college tuition

Author: Hector Milla

Lets face it tuition fees escalate every year and we can't do anything about it except face it. Loans are a big help to any working student or a middle class family but would it not be a much bugger help if you didn't have to pay it back?

Yes, you won't have to pay it back. Just pass their requirements and you won't have to worry about it after you graduate. No more minuses in your future salary. Isn't that great? Think about it a good education for free.

Aurora Lillo Editor of the "Free Scholarships And Grants" website -- http://www.FreeScholarshipsAndGrants.org/free-government-grants-money -- pointed out;

"a€¦Before you start dreaming about this good life, you need to know that this will not just be handed to you so easily. You have to work for it to get it. Of course it won't be that hard but since their will be fierce competition you might want to give a little more for ita€¦"

As any student normally does, you need to research. Oh yes delve into it. Know what you will be getting into. Its not that there is any loopholes or possible payments along with it, you just need to know 1) how to apply, 2) where to get the application papers, 3) what are the available college grants, 4) what are the requirements, 5) are you eligible for it, 6) what are the documents necessary, 7) when are the applications due (remember the early bird, gets the worm), and know where to pass it.

A few reminders:

- Know how to write well. When asking for funding for your schooling you need to write. If you can express your needs more clearly you are closer to getting that grant.
- Your request must be succinct.
- Pass your application way before the due date. Remember you have tons of competition for this grant. The earlier the better. This grants are the first come, first serve type.
- Get a hold of the grant request forms from your school counselor or the financial aid office of your school. The form you are requesting for is free and is more commonly called as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- You will be receiving a Student Aid Report or the SAR. Read it carefully. In this report you will know if your grant was accepted and how much you will receive for your tuition.

"a€¦Now you can study better because you won't have to worry about your tuition. Get that grant and study hard. A good future is within your reacha€¦" added A. Lillo.

One Minute Money Lessons: What's the Best Way to Pay for College? Save Now or Financial Aid Later?

Author: Beth D'Andrea

So you've just had a baby and you're feeling a bit over your head. Between baby food and diapers, car seats doctor's appointments and very small clothing the money seems to be flowing out the door. This is definitely time to review your budget and there is one more thing you need to add: college savings.

"College savings? My baby was just born!" you say. "How can I possibly be thinking that far ahead?" Because saving now, even though it might seem impossible at first, will cost you so very much less than borrowing later. I'd like to show you just how possible it is and how much you're going to actually SAVE by starting to plan now for your child's education.

The College Board, which annually collects nation-wide college tuition and financial aid information, stated in its "Trends in Financial Aid" that the median debt that bachelor degree recipients graduated with last year was ,000. Only 38% of bachelor degree recipients from public four-year schools graduated with NO debt. An even scarier statistic is that only 4% of bachelor degree recipients graduated from for-profit schools with NO debt.

If this makes you think that taking out a loan for college is just part of the way the game is played, think again. That debt costs a lot of money, and there is no need to give your hard-earned money to someone else when you can keep it to yourself.

The Cost of Borrowing

Let's say that your neighbor takes out a college loan for the median amount shown above of ,000. Interest rates can vary anywhere from below 3% to as high as over 10%, depending on your credit history, the school you choose and who is taking out and co-signing the loan.

In addition, your neighbor can choose to begin paying back the loan while his child is still in school, or possibly take advantage of a deferred payment plan which allows a student to wait an additional six months past graduation to begin payments.

Sound confusing? That's the first problem. Not everyone realizes that a deferred payment plan still means that interest is accruing and must be paid as part of the full loan payment after graduation (making your final loan payoff even greater).

The second problem, simply, is what this will cost your neighbor. Assuming your neighbor got a loan rate of 5% and began making interest payments while his child was in school, to save some money. This ,000 loan will end up costing him nearly ,000. At 10%, it would cost over ,000!

The Beauty of Saving (for College, Especially!)

Do you want to know how easy it is to save that ,000 for your child's education? Start the day your baby is born and put away a month, every month until they are 18. Can you do that? I certainly think so. Sixty-five dollars per month is all it takes to save not only the ,000 that you won't have to borrow, but you'll also never have to pay the additional ,000 to ,000 in interest payments to the bank!

But wait - there's more! When you make a concerted effort to save for college, the government helps you, making saving that much easier. The IRS code provides for a program called a 529 Plan. This program allows your investments to grow tax-free (reducing your federal taxes) as long as they are used to pay qualified education expenses (now you've saved money twice). And, some states even allow you to deduct any contributions you make to a 529 plan, further reducing your state taxes (now, you've saved three times while saving for college!).

Saving to pay yourself really is better than paying out all of that interest to someone else. Take a few moments right now to check out your budget and determine how much money you can devote to your child's education today!

Financial Aid For Students

The financial aid procedure is a daunting one. In case you do not obtain a primer from the older sibling or guidance counselor who is on college campus somewhere, this could be problematic to find where to begin. Actually, with an introduction to the essentials and a little research, you will use even the most strange financial help acronyms with ease. The starting point should be the FAFSA. The step will define what you need to do next, because once the application is processed you will know how much money you are going to receive from the federal assistance programs as well as grants, how much you will borrow via federal loans, plus how much of the package you may have to supplement via private lending companies. The procedure is the same for college graduates, though you may not qualify for every program obtainable to undergraduate students, comprising the Federal Pell Grants, the free gift from the federal government with a present maximum of ,350. When you have done that, you start weighing your opportunities, and potentially searching for the ways to reduce your college expenses. Scholarships are a good source of student financial aid, and in case you apply early and frequently enough, you will have a greater option of finding a good sum of free money to use the financial aid package. Your student financial aid options are scholarships, grants, loans and some others. You are sure to find among them what you need for successful college completion.

Financial Aid Options For College

Author: Samantha Taylor

Financial aid is the money helping pay for education. It is given through state, federal, and private sources in kind of scholarships, work-study programs, grants, as well as loans. When you benefit from these financial help options first, you cut the price of receiving the education you wish. 1. Scholarships are the source of money, which does not have to be repaid. They can be provided to students demonstrating or showing potential for excellence in particular disciplines or area. Academic standing and financial need are not often part of the standard for getting scholarships. In fact, there are numerous scholarships accessible via colleges, the state, and different companies, clubs and organizations. Most colleges and universities automatically consider you for college-based scholarships if you apply for the college admission. In case you qualify, the college's admission office notifies you. Concerning the other kinds of scholarships, they will not find you, but you need to find them. You need to surf the Internet and look for recommendations from your family members, friends, as well as academic advisors. 2. Grants are a source of money, which does't need to be repaid as well. Grants are given to students demonstrating a financial need grounded on formulas set by state and federal governments, or the college. You can get grants from state and federal governments, your college, or private organizations. When you progress via the financial help application procedure, you will see whether you qualify for a grant as well as how much must be awarded.
