Is Wikipedia a Viable Source for College Papers?

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Ben Welch" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'ben-welch/24830">Ben Welch

As a college writing instructor, I can vouch that there are certain questions that come up again and again during the course of every writing class. Questions include:

When do I use "then" and when do I use "than"?
How do I write a good thesis statement?
Where do I put the page numbers?

Then there are more general questions, such as:

Do you always have to start class on time and end class on time?
Is there anyone else who teaches this course?
You're married. Really? You? (Often followed by a "That poor woman" muttered under their breath.)

But perhaps the most common question I get is whether Wikipedia, the ubiquitous online encyclopedia, can be used as a viable source for research papers. In response to this question, I try to explain how academic discourse works - I talk about accuracy, credibility, objectivity, peer-reviewing, and the like. Most of the time, students just stare at me blankly and say, "So... ah... is that a no?"

As such, I've been searching for a better response, one that I hope will finally put to rest this question, which has been lurking in the halls of academia and feeding on the unsuspecting brains of my students like a zombie from one of the old Simpson's Halloween Specials. At long last, I think I finally found the answer, which was provided by, of all people, the founder of Wikipedia.com, Jimmy Wales. To quote from The Chronicle of Higher Education:

Speaking at a conference at the University of Pennsylvania on Friday called "The Hyperlinked Society," Mr. Wales said that he gets about 10 e-mail messages a week from students who complain that Wikipedia has gotten them into academic hot water. "They say, 'Please help me. I got an F on my paper because I cited Wikipedia'" and the information turned out to be wrong, he says. But he said he has no sympathy for their plight, noting that he thinks to himself: "For God sake, you're in college; don't cite the encyclopedia."

Mr. Wales goes on to say that Wikipedia is good for getting a general overview for a subject but notes that academic papers should draw from real sources - you know, like the kind you find in the library.

There it is - straight from the horse's mouth - Wikipedia is not a viable source for college papers. Thus, I think it's finally time that students and educators accept the fact that serious academic discussions must be conducted in serious academic forums. Websites like Wikipedia simply cannot function as the means for conveying crucial information on scholarly topics.

Any student Attending College or University will have a long list of, allegedly essential, books to buy. Only half of these books will ever be read to any extent and after the year is over the books are never used again. They will sit in corners or clutter up cupboards.

There is an enormous market in pre-owned college books. It is organized formally through bookshops and websites, and informally through college notice boards. Students will usually be able to buy the books they need at far below their new cost, once they start their course.

Bookshops and online bookshops will buy textbooks at the end of the year for a pittance, because there are no buyers in the market at that time. These companies hold onto the books for 2 months, and then sell them for the new, higher market price at the beginning of the new college year. The market price in September is much higher because now, there are more book buyers than book sellers in the market.

If you are selling last year's books the best way to get most of your money back is to hang onto them until the new college year starts, then advertise them on campus, or use EBay or Amazon to sell them.

If you want to buy your next year's books for the best price then ask around, even advertise on campus, or throw a website together and buy them in May or June, not September. You could even make a business of this. You could borrow money to buy hundreds of books in early summer, buying your stock for next to nothing. You then sell your stock in the fall, realize your profit, pay off the loan, and still have enough to buy books next May without borrowing.

You need to do your research with the faculties to find out which courses are changing significantly, which ones are expanding numbers and which courses will be taking on less students next year.

Online Bachelor Degree Courses - How to Find the Best Online Bachelor Degree Courses

Author: <a target="_blank" title="John Maxted" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'john-maxted/103742">John Maxted

When you are working on improving your life, one of the best things that you can do is get a college education. Getting a bachelor degree is very important to your future because without one you are going to be unable to find the highest paying jobs, or advance as far as possible in your career.

A bachelors degree can help you solidify your place in your work environment, and achieve all that is possible for you. However, it can be tough to find that time it takes to drop everything and go back to school which is why online bachelor degree programs are so popular.

Online bachelor degree courses enable you to earn your degree via the internet. You take your courses online, and work independently on the course work. Your classes, assignments and exams are all located on your online site, which offers the opportunity to earn your entire degree without ever having to go to a physical college or university.

This works for many reasons. It allows you to work at your own pace, and to take classes as you have the time and money for them. It also allows you to continue working at your current job, take care of your family responsibilities, and continue doing all of the other things that you need to do in order to enjoy your life.

Another great feature of some online degree programs is that you can also complete them in less time than is possible with a conventional college degree program. Some online schools offer specially designed accelerated online degree programs that make it possible to complete your online degree in two years or less.

Finding the Best Online Bachelor Degree Course For You

Finding the best online bachelor degree courses can be hard, so there are a few things that you will want to do to make sure that you are able to get exactly what you are looking for. First of all, think about the type of program you would like pursue for your online degree courses, and the type of degree you would like to get. Then, research the best online bachelor degree programs that offer that type of degree. After you have completed that, you need to check several things.

Firstly, make sure that the online college or institution you are going to look in to is accredited. An accredited online university or college will give you a degree that will transfer well and be recognized and respected no matter what situation you are in.

Secondly, make sure that they have financial aid available if you choose to use it.

Thirdly, look at the way that the online college operates and see if it meets your needs. For instance, are there online forums, or is it all through email? Are there specific online places you have to be at a specific date and time, like online forums or classes, or can you do all of the work whenever it suits you? What other types of online media technology is being used to facilitate the education process by that particular online college. Do they offer accelerated degree programs?

In order to select the best of the online bachelor degree programs you are considering, you need to make sure that you have looked into the course program and delivery methods and you like what you see. Then, you will feel comfortable knowing that you are happy with the program in general.

It is important not to put off or postpone your research into online bachelor degree programs as the right selection is critical to your success. The sooner you start reading up on the various courses and how they work, the sooner you will have the knowledge required to select and enroll into the online program best suited to you and start your online learning experience. And of course the earlier you get started, the earlier you will graduate and have the qualifications you need to build a successful career in your chosen profession.

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Free Engineering Guide" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'free-engineering-guide/103980">Free Engineering Guide

Why UK?
UK qualifications are recognized and respected throughout the world. Your UK qualification will be a strong foundation for building your future, boosting your career and prospects for a higher salary.

1. Quality standards for UK institutions are among the best in the world. There are more than three thousand educational institutions that welcome international students in the UK.UK degrees can take only three years and postgraduate Master's courses only one year - compared with four years and two years in most other countries. This means you will save a great deal on both tuition fees and living costs - and you will be able to start working and earning money sooner.
2. Health care is often free for international students. You are likely to be able to take advantage of National Health Service (NHS) treatment, as well as reduced-cost medicines, dental treatment and eye tests. Find out whether you are entitled to NHS care in the Advice section of the website.
3. Thousands of scholarships and bursaries are offered by UK institutions just for international students, while more than twenty-one thousand international students receive scholarship funding from the UK Government every year. You can also get more information about these from the scholarships page.
4. Thanks to changes in work regulations, international students in the UK can now work up to twenty hours a week when studying and full time during vacations.

Admission Requirements

Enquiries concerning admission to a graduate course should be sent to the institutions at least twelve months before the proposed start date. Most institutions do not have a formal closing date for receipt of applications; however, admission to a taught course may have to be submitted by a specific date which varies from course to course. It is also advisable to apply as early as possible given the closing dates and possible level of competition for scholarships given by foundations, trusts and the universities themselves.

It may be several years since you last took a college course, or you may never have gone to college at all, but if getting that college degree is an important part of your financial plans, you will need to know about some ways that you can pay for it.

First, be careful of student loans. It is tempting to sign up for a learn now pay later program, but those payments can be a big problem once they start up. The extra income that your degree is supposed to generate can be eaten up by high loan payments after you graduate. Saying this, many people still opt for student loans.

College is expensive, and if you are concerned about racking up too much student loan debt, your options for paying for it are limited. Scholarships are available for your college work. These include both Federal and private sector programs.

Federal dollars are available as well, and you should definitely go for all of the Federal scholarships that you can. Fortunately, this is easier than you might think as nearly all Federal student aid is accessed through a single on line application process. By filling out the free FAFSA application, you will be put on the list for a number of programs.

Keep in mind that you will need to submit your FAFSA information each year while you are attending school, and that the earlier you file, the better chance you have at getting the top money. If you have looked into all of your Federal and Private scholarship options and are still short, there are things that you can try besides getting student loans.

Consider starting at a community college first. These are generally much cheaper than 4 year colleges and can make your scholarship money stretch further. Talk to the financial aid people at your school and find out why your scholarship levels are low. There may be some things that you can do about it. Money is available and waiting in many forms to help you get your degree.

Do you need more money for school? These resource, scholarships for women over 30 years of age and scholarships for women over 30 years of agecan help further too.

Private Scholarships: the Billion Dollar Rip-off! Author:

Private Scholarships: the Billion Dollar Rip-off!

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Reecy Aresty" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'reecy-aresty/19638">Reecy Aresty

Towards the end of every school year, most non-profit organizations hold their Awards Banquets where worthy students are honored with various scholarships. Often, the names of recipients appear in the newspapers as an acknowledgment of all their hard work and dedication. Since the awarding organization is primarily giving the money to be used for the student’s education, they simply ask the family where the student will be attending, and parents, unaware of the pitfall, tell them. Virtually all such organizations are responsible for the fatal error of making the check payable to the student AND the college. So sets the stage for the billion dollar scholarship rip-off.

No, congratulations are not in order. In fact, pity the poor student who dedicated several years of blood, sweat and tears to the Red Cross, YMCA, Kiwanis, Rotary, or other such non-profit organization, only to see all of their well deserved scholarship money evaporate into thin air and wind up in the “scholarship fund” of their college of choice instead of their own financial aid packages.

Most schools send out their financial aid offers between January and April, with a May 1st decision date. As most colleges consider private scholarship awards a resource to help pay for a student’s education, they reduce their share of the student’s financial aid package dollar for dollar, and this is where the problem lies.

What a kick in the teeth it is for a family to read a revised award letter showing that the school’s portion of the financial aid was reduced by the amount of the private scholarship the student earned! The bad news is usually listed on the award letter as private scholarship, outside aid, or very often as other. Here’s a typical before and after scenario:

Before Receiving a Private Scholarship

$45,000 - Cost of Attendance (COA = tuition, fees, room & board, books, etc.)

$10,000 - Expected Family Contribution (EFC)*

$35,000 - Financial Need (FN = the maximum amount of aid a family will qualify for)

* EFC = the minimum the federal gov’t determines a family will pay at any college

We’ll assume the student qualifies for the following aid:

$ 3,500 - Stafford Loan

$ 4,000 - Perkins Loan

$ 2,500 - Federal work-study award

$ 3,000 - State grant

$22,000 - College scholarships, grants, tuition waivers, etc.

$35,000 - Total

The student will qualify for a maximum of $22,000/yr in financial aid from the college.

After Receiving a Private Scholarship:

$45,000 - Cost of Attendance (COA)

$10,000 - Expected Family Contribution (EFC)

$35,000 - Financial Need

The student qualifies for the following aid:

$ 3,500 - Stafford Loan

$ 4,000 - Perkins Loan

$ 2,500 - Federal work-study award

$ 3,000 - State grants, etc.

$10,000 - Private Scholarship

$12,000 - College scholarships, grants, tuition waivers, etc.

$35,000 - Total

While the student still qualifies for a maximum of $22,000/yr in financial aid from the college, the private scholarship has now become a bonus for the school, not the student. All of the student’s hard work actually saves the college money, and the benefit to the student is reduced to nothing!

It should be no great surprise to anyone that our greedy institutions of higher learning laid the groundwork for this clever thievery months in advance. Students who apply to any of the 225 elite private and state colleges that require the CSS Financial Aid Profile (FAP) are asked to indicate whether they expect to be scholarship recipients. Section SR, Question SR-150 asks for the dollar amount anticipated from student resources for school year 2007-2008, such as “grants, scholarships and fellowships,” and they must be listed individually in Section ES.

The majority of schools that only require the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), simply send out a questionnaire asking about private scholarships. They are less devious, but just as deft.

Who could imagine in their wildest dreams that colleges would stoop so low and play so dirty? Truth be told – and have no doubt about it - it’s all about the money. Every year there are billions of dollars awarded in private scholarships, and the beneficiaries of all the hard work that earned them is none other than our poor, starving institutions of higher learning, enriching their billion dollar endowment funds at the expense of their hard working, deserving students.

The best way for a family to avoid the injustice is to personally discuss this sordid state of affairs with the scholarship committee either at the time of application or well in advance of their award announcements. In that way, the check can be made payable to the parents instead of the student! If that fails, parents should ask them to postpone sending the check until after the student has enrolled.

As a last resort, have the parents call the college financial aid administrator, explain the situation, and kindly ask (grovel if you must), that because of all their hard work, the student is really entitled to the money and the college should not penalize them by reducing their aid by the amount of the scholarship. If they take a hard line, try to negotiate some of the money back into the student’s pocket, because half a loaf is better than none. Never lose sight of the fact that financial aid is a commodity, and like all commodities, it is negotiable!

Free College Scholarship - The Best Way to Pay for College

Author: <a target="_blank" title="Hector Milla" 'href="http://www.articlesbase.com/authors/'hector-milla/8096">Hector Milla

Due to the high cost of college, more and more students are looking for alternative ways to pay for college.

Fortunately, the best way to pay for college is free and only takes a little bit work on your part. The best way is by using free college scholarships. You get free money that you don't have to pay for and you don't have to pay it back. Of course, you will need to qualify and take some action.

Hector Milla Editor of the "Free Scholarships And Grants" website -- http://www.FreeScholarshipsAndGrants.org/free-online-scholarships-money -- pointed out;

“…First, you need to find the scholarships. There are scholarships at your high school, the college you're going to, and other places, but if you can't find something that you qualify, you can always go online. There are tons of different scholarships available online in a whole bunch of different categories. If you don't have straight As and can't qualify for those based on academics, than look for something that has to do with your skills. If you have financial need, that may make a difference as well…”

There are also scholarships where all you have to do is enter. You don't need to fill out 50 forms or write a 1,000 word essay. You simply need to apply and it's a drawing. There is absolutely no reason not to apply for every one of these that you find. Also, if you qualify for a scholarship with an essay, take the time to write the essay. A lot of people won't feel like doing it either and that will only increase your chances of winning.

“…At our site, you have a great chance to get a $10,000 scholarship. All you need to do is enter your email address and you have a chance to win the scholarship drawn at the end of the month. These are the best kinds of scholarships if you favor odds and like having to do little work to get there. If you do win, that will help you out a lot…” added H. Milla.

In the search to evolve their careers and uncover new opportunities, individuals are always looking to go back to school to finish off their Bachelors Degree. This is the case now more than ever before, with the global recession and a increasingly competitive and crowded marketplace. It can sometimes be forgotten but there is a distict difference between finding the easiest degree that you can and finding something that actually helps you out. This begs the question, is there a worthwhile degree program that remains relatively easy to complete?

What cannot be overlooked is that there is a difference between finding the easiest degree option that\'s worthwhile and just signing up with the easiest thing you can find regardless of its value. Yes, it\'s possible for you today to try to purchase a phony degree for someplace. Or you can attend a quick credit program from an unaccredited university. Both of those options are easy, however they won\'t get you anything. Your Bachelors Degree is more than just a certificate of completion, it signifies all of the value it holds in your eyes and in others\' and it represents all of the knowledge you\'ve gained in your studies.

Therefore your easiest degree option also has to hold real value, and the best available solution is an online or distance learning program. One of these programs is so easy because there are no constraints on when or where you can learn from. Don\'t worry about showing up in a certain city in a certain building at a certain time every day. Instead, fit your schoolwork into your schedule. As long as you complete your assignments then it doesn\'t matter when you do them.

Another great benefit to the distance learning scenario is that you don\'t have to ravel or commute. Commuting not only costs money and takes time, but it\'s also aggravating. Worse than commuting though is realizing you have to completely uproot and move away to go to the school that you want to go to. However, getting your education through an online bachelors degree course allows you to study from any accredited university in the world without traveling, moving or commuting.

The key to advancing your career and giving yourself a better life is also being able to complete your journey quickly. That\'s what the quest for the easiest degree program is really all about it. Well, with an online program you can finish your degree from beginning to end in less time than with any other option. If you choose to pursue an accelerated degree program you can complete your program within two years.

When you feel like your back is against the wall and you\'re stuck in a rut, then go back to school and finish your Bachelors Degree. The easiest degree program that you can find today is based on online education, capitalizing on all of the great advancements in technology in recent years. It\'s easier than ever before and you can be done with the program in less than two years from enrolment, which means you\'re already that much closer to your new and improved career.

John Maxted is experienced with online degree programs and can help you choose the easiest online degree without delay at www.betteronlinedegrees.com
