It’s arguably the hardest job in the world, being a mother. And when you have to do it singlehandedly, it becomes more difficult because there’s just no use of setting schedules with kids around; even the best laid plans come to nothing. So if you’re a single parent with a young child (or more than one), and if you’re trying to juggle online classes at the same time, you’re more likely to be frazzled all the time and ready to pull your hair out with all the demands on your time. And if exams are lurking around the corner or assignment deadlines looming, you could end up cracking under the strain of having to look after your kids and keep up to speed with your schoolwork too.
It is hard, but it’s not impossible to take care of your home, family and studies at the same time. All you need is the dedication and the will to succeed.
• Do a little every day: Rome was not built in a day, as the saying goes. So you cannot expect to do all your studying and cramming just before your exams. It’s best to do a little every day, whether it’s writing an assignment or preparing for an exam that’s months away. An hour a day should be enough to read your lessons, understand them, and take care of other written work like essays and assignments.
• Use your kids’ nap time wisely: When your kids are asleep, don’t drift off to sleep yourself or settle down in front of the television. Instead, use this quiet time to get some studying done or to take care of other necessary tasks around the house. This is the only time when you can do things faster and more effectively.
• Get up an hour earlier: Try waking an hour earlier than your kids so that you have some alone time for yourself. You could use it to get started on breakfast or just to go through your lessons and finish up pending work.
• Rope in family and friends for some help: If you’re really pressed for time and need someone to watch the kids, get family members or friends to babysit while you study for exams or complete that long pending assignment.
Taking care of your kids and handling your lessons is a tough act, but if you are able to pull it off, you feel a great sense of achievement. So try and give it your best shot before you decide to call it quits, because the feeling of success alone is worth all the sacrifices you make.
