College District of Spoon River covers part of Schuyler County, Mason County, West Central Illinois, Knox County, and McDonough County.

Campus Features

Originally the College was functioning in the old Senior High School building in Canton. Towards the end of 1966 it moved out of the building to new location in leased space in Canton. With the separation Canton Public School District link to the old building and campus was cut off. Main campus of the college has 160 acres of land at a distance of around 4 miles from the city of Canton. Macomb High school building in Macomb, Illinois was occupied by the college Spoon River in 1984. College also has learning centers in Havana and Rushville, both inside the state of Illinois. Two community centers are functioning at Macomb and Canton, Illinois.

Brief History

Founded on October 17 th , 1959 the college was previously known as the Canton Community College. First class was held in 1960 using the Canton Senior High School Campus building. It was classified as Class II Junior College in 1964 by the State Act. With the formation Junior College District 534, the college was separated from the Canton Public school district and was formally renamed as the Spoon River College in 1968. A satellite campus is also there at the Illinois River Correctional Centre.

Accreditation

Accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the college also obtained the maximum ten years accreditation approval by Higher Learning Commission of the NCA in 2002.

Academics

Having transfer agreements with four year colleges and universities including the Carbondale, Springfield, and Western Illinois universities , the college promotes the educational attraction programs. Agreement between the schools ensures that the students migrate for higher studies or other competitive programs in a slow and steady manner thereby enabling the student's enrollment in one of the nine participating educational institutions. In addition the college also offers online degrees . In all there are 35 associate degree programs, 36 certificate degree programs, transfer programs, and career educational programs.

Admission and Financial Aids

Both part time and full time courses are provided in the colleges. Besides admission as non-credit enrollees and dual credit enrollees are also permissible subject to fulfillment of eligibility criteria. Similarly grants from Federal and State Governments, institutional grants, scholarships, and loans can be available to students using the common FAFSA form for applying.
