Service Learning:Combining Theory with Real Life
When you're a busy student trying to juggle the demands of study and family, the last thing you might think you have time for is volunteering. But what if you could volunteer and get course credits for doing it at the same time? Welcome to service learning! Service learning is a method of learning where the student is placed into a community service organization, then given the opportunity to reflect on their experiences in the form of a paper or project with consultation from their instructor. Service learning provides real world experience and allows the student to put the theories learned in class into action.
For example, I participated in a service learning class with high-school aged ESL students while I attended Gonzaga. I learned the theories of second-language acquisition in class and was able to apply what I learned by working directly with students. I would have to say that the course was a highlight of my college career. It was very inspiring to watch these kids struggle with learning a new language and see their growth week after week. For my final project, I completed a case study on one student. The study delved into the background of why he had come to the U.S., what his educational level was in his country of origin, and what his goals and challenges were in terms of learning a new language and adjusting to his new culture.
If you're interested in service learning, see if there is a service learning department at your college. A resource for anyone interested in participating in service learning is Learn and Serve America which is a national clearinghouse for service learning opportunities. Remember, your volunteer experiences, especially those related to your field of study, look great on your resume.
Update: I just found out about another source of information and programs about service learning from Mike Merriman via Twitter. He is affiliated with True Hero, Inc., which is a non-profit organization which "grants cash awards to high school, college and qualified non-profit community youth organizations that sponsor service trips and volunteer activities for students."
