Online or Face-to-Face Delivery: What Works for You.

There is no way around it—walking into a classroom filled with 18 year-old freshmen can be very daunting if you have been out of school for a while. You will feel rusty, nervous and ready to run out the door. Don’t panic. Having been in the workforce or managed the demands of a family is a huge advantage for you. You know how to set priorities and manage your time, a thing that is lost on the kids. If you are thirty-five, the last thing on your mind will be how to score beer for tonight’s kegger. You will be far more motivated for your own success than the teen that has Daddy to pay their way through college. Having said this, I realize that sitting in a classroom of eighteen-year-old freshmen is not for everyone.

Unfortunately,  face-to-face delivery is often not a very convenient option for working adults. Bosses tend not to be very forgiving about employees leaving work early for a 2:00 PM class. But you have to know yourself enough to know if you're self-disciplined enough for online classes. Make no mistake, online programs are definitely not the easy way out. The classes are every bit as demanding or even more so than their traditional counterparts. If you need someone cracking the whip to get you going, or more structure for success, you made do better in the classroom than in cyberspace.

Online classes are becoming more and more popular, especially among adult learners. Beware, however that not all online programs are equal. Employers may not give the same weight to online degrees as to traditional programs. Your best bet is to make sure your classes are from an accredited institution known for the overall quality of its programs. More and more nationally recognized schools are adding online programs.

A few caveats: if you are thinking of enrolling in an online program, ask a prospective employer if they would hire a graduate from the program. There is no sense wasting your time, money and effort if an employer will not hire you because of a bias against an online program. As well, if you are not a self-motivated person, you might fall into the trap of putting off assignments, as there is no steely-eyed professor to face down. You must follow the syllabus to the letter and if there is a participation component to the class (which is likely) make sure that you post quality comments and questions in the prescribed numbers to obtain full points for the participation component of the class.
