Funds Increasing For Students Pursuing Science And Technology Degrees
Due to the fact that American students have recently scored poorly in the science and math sections of standardized tests, President Obama recently unveiled initiatives to improve educational programs in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. These efforts have been extended to the higher education sector, inspiring many organizations, institutions and state governments to promote education on STEM subjects.
Millions of dollars are being allocated for campus-based and accredited degree online, to expand the educational opportunities for STEM-related degrees. Students will be able to take advantage of these programs, and in turn receive a more comprehensive education.
The STEM Challenge Scholarship program is intended to foster regional partnerships between colleges, school districts and employers in order to create and distribute financial aid awards in order to attract students to degree programs and careers in related industries.
Officials are hoping that the college degrees programs will encourage colleges and universities nationwide to design and implement programs in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics that will meet the needs of businesses seeking to employ educated and knowledgeable employees. A proposed plan will also provide tuition assistance to some college students seeking to become educators themselves, in the areas of math and science.
Several states are providing several million dollars to colleges and universities to aid in increasing graduation rates, especially in STEM fields. Employers in these industries are developing programs that would aid students in the pursuit of a career in these fields upon graduation. Students working toward technology related careers would benefit from some of the scholarship programs being launched specifically for their fields.
Additionally, there are a wealth of award programs and scholarships available to students who demonstrate an aptitude for STEM related fields in High School. These scholarships and awards usually amount to several thousand dollars and are awarded toward the tuition and fees of any college providing a degree program related to STEM fields.
The company will partner with Fibertech Networks to award a $3,000 scholarship to a female high school student planning to enroll in a degree on line program in information systems, computer systems or another IT-related field. Female and minority students who demonstrate commitment, dedication, academic excellence, leadership and determination are eligible to apply for the $1,000 Doug Schwinn/Tech Collective Scholarship.
