Double or Nothing: Double Majors

Double majors are tough but allow you more career flexibility. You have to meet the requirements for two degrees at the same time; however, if you pick a second major in the same general area as the first, you'll have an easier time as the core requirements will likely be similar. For example, if your 1st major is English literature and your 2nd major is creative writing it won't be as tough on you if you had a major in chemistry and a second major in philosophy. It's certainly not impossible to pull this off, but it will undoubtedly take you more credits to earn your degree than it would with a single major. The implication is you will need more time and money for a double major than for a single major degree.

There are some schools and universities that have rules that double majors must be closely connected. They are thinking of the student's best interest as the demands of a double major are intense. Before deciding on a double major, you must know whether your school will allow you to combine these programs or not. You should consider consulting with the department heads from each major before signing up for classes.

The double major will require you to devote even more time to your studies. Ask yourself if you can really do justice to the demands of a double major, especially if you are a parent. As much as some of us back to school moms take to studying, your family still needs you to be there for them and participate in events in their lives. If you need to work full- or part-time while taking classes, I would strongly reconsider the double major option. Something will have to give; either your grades, your job or your family commitments.
