What is a Compare and Contrast Essay

Author: Kenneth Elliott

Writing a compare contrast essay is a big challenge for students along with studying their academic subjects. A compare contrast essay is an essay in which the students will either have to compare or contrast something in the given topic. A comparison essay is one in which you can compare similarities between two things whereas in a contrast essay you will have to emphasize the differences between two things.

When selecting the topics to write about, you should be sure to pick topics that actually have similarities rather than those that are having differences. Students freeze up when they are asked to write a compare and contrast essay which can be very easy write provided you know how. Here are some useful tips which help students in learning how to write a compare and contrast essay. If you follow these strategies then it might not really become that tough for you to write these essays on your own. You just have to follow some strategies and a proper structure while writing your compare and contrast essay.

In compare and contrast essays the writer can express their personal views. You are free to use any organizational style you want. But there is no such a rule that it should follow a particular pattern, but if you follow some standard pattern that would be great for your readers to understand and grasp your essays quickly. This will help the reader to judge your writing if your essay is point to point basis. Always keep your audience in mind and arrange your essay accordingly. You should be able to support your statements whatever you have mentioned in your essay. Hence the student who is writing a compare contrast essay should have a thorough knowledge on the topic that you are writing.

When writing a compare contrast essay the student should keep in mind that he/she should not write all the compare in one paragraph and all the contrast statements in another. Instead, the essay should be cohesive with some kind of similarities and differences in a single paragraph. This will give the reader a better picture of what you are trying to convince them. You might also start with discussing with the similarities and then continue on contrasting with those previously made statements. A compare and contrast essay needs to have a solid introduction and a conclusion paragraph. Your main goal should not be just to convince the reader but to make the reader think in a different way.

Make a list of items that are comparable and contrastable. Sort them out based on priority and importance. Always pick the point of view which you are confident of supporting. Start the essay with your arguments and continue with supporting them with your contrast and comparative statements. Always provide a perfect introduction and conclusion, this impresses your readers clearly. If you learn to write compare and contrast essays then you can easily write any kind of essays with any theme very easily.

I would introduce the topic in the intro paragraph and then depending on how long your paper needs to be, develop a couple compare topics and a couple contrast topics in the body paragraphs. I always find it helpful to look at examples to better understand how to write specific types of essays:

My son is doing one right now on comparing a snickers bar to a 3 musketeers. ( Yes, it was NOT chosen by him, but by his teacher.)

    1. Introduction Paragraph. It should include an opening statement and your thesis.

    2. This section should go through all the similarities of the people you are writing about. (Probably 2 paragraphs, one for each of the people you are writing about.)

    3. This section should go through all the differences of the two people.(One or Two Paragraphs)

    4. Conclusion- This should wrap up everything you have just proven in your paper. It should restate the thesis in a new official and confident way.

If you haven’t already done so, it helps to make a venn diagram first on one side you write all about how person a is different. on the other side you write how person b is different, in the middle of the 2, you would write in words that you would use to describe both people.

Yes, I’ve noticed they can get repetitive at times. Just carefully pick and choose your words used to descibe them, if you feel you’ve used the same word too many times, look for other synonyms for that particular word and write them in a few places so u don’t use the exact same words over and over.
I hope this helps you! Good luck!
