Can You Get School Textbooks on Kindle?
Many of my readers have wondered if they can get school and/or textbooks on Kindle?
Yes, you sure can.
Not only can you get many textbooks formatted for Kindle you can save yourself a bundle by going this route over traditional textbooks. As of today, December 15, 2010, there are 9,430 results for college textbooks for Kindle on Amazon, and this number will increase steadily over time.
If you've ever wondered about the advantages of school textbooks on Kindle, there are many.
For one thing, you won't break your back carrying your textbooks in your Kindle like you would in your backpack. As well, e-textbooks may very well be a greener option than traditional textbooks are. Not only will you save trees, you also are not contributing to pollution from shipping books across the country or even across the continent.
Although investing in a Kindle is a fair outlay initially, it is a one-time purchase, as there are no subscription fees with the Kindle. But when you consider that you can save anywhere from $10-20 per textbook by going with a Kindle, you can easily save yourself $100-200 per semester, and not have to deal with a used textbook that someone else has dog-eared and marked up.
Another bonus is that the Kindle comes with free 3G wireless included with purchase--no subscriber fees! With Kindle's free reading applications, your e-textbooks can be shared among any of your PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads, BlackBerrys, or Android Phones.
If you're a hard-core reader, or an English major, the Kindle can save you money in another way. Currently, there are 5,565 classic books, such as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Treasure Island, The Scarlet Letter and many others available as free books for Kindle.
There are three different models of Kindle to consider.
The most recent roll out is the 6" Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device with free 3G and WiFi. This model works globally, and comes with the new E Ink Pearl Technology. The E Ink Pearl Technology is an important advance, as it heightens contrast between the screen and the displayed text, making for easier reading, especially in bright sunlight.
This device comes in at a price of $189 US.
Here are some additional features of this product:
- All-New, High-Contrast E Ink Screen – 50% better contrast with latest E Ink Pearl technology
- Read in Bright Sunlight – No glare
- New and Improved Fonts – New crisper, darker fonts
- New Sleek Design – 21% smaller body while keeping the same 6" size reading area
- 15% Lighter – Only 8.7 ounces, weighs less than a paperback
- Battery Life of One Month – A single charge lasts up to one month with wireless off
- Double the Storage – Up to 3,500 books
- Books in 60 Seconds – Download books anytime, anywhere
- Free 3G Wireless – No monthly payments, no annual contracts
- Built-In Wi-Fi – In addition to the 3G wireless, you can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots
- 20% Faster Page Turns – Seamless reading
- Enhanced PDF Reader – With dictionary lookup, notes, and highlights
- New WebKit-Based Browser – Free 3G web browsing (experimental)
If you're looking for a model with a few less bells and whistles and a lower price point, there is the Kindle WiFi, which comes in at $139. The main difference is that this model doesn't have the global capabilities of its higher priced cousin, or come with free 3G wireless. Other than that, there are no big differences. If you travel a lot, or want the free 3G capabilities, $50 is not a lot to spend on the upgrade, especially when you consider the advantages of having free 3G.
Lastly, students may want to consider the Kindle DX. The biggest advantage of this model is that the screen is considerable larger at 10" than the 6" screen size of its brothers. When you need to look at in-depth diagrams and illustrations (say for biology class) then having a larger screen for display makes a lot of sense. However, the price tag for the DX comes in at a considerably heftier $379.
