What Sorts of Things Does One Learn in College Microbiology?
I have to take a microbiology class for one of my prerequisites for an associates degree in nursing. I was wondering what all one learns and does in this class.
I know it can vary from college to college but there must be some similarities, right?
You learn about the cellular structure of prokaryotes, their metabolic pathways, molecular biology, and genetics. You also learn about viruses and eukaryotic microbes like protists and fungi. Interactions between microbes and humans (including antibiotics and immunology) are touched upon as well.
It can get a bit tedious sometimes because of the detail and all the mechanisms you learn. For example, in general biology you learn that bacteria reproduce by binary fission. They grow and split into two. Simple huh? In microbio you learn that the protein MinC becomes activated once DNA replication finishes, and goes on to deactivate another protein MinE, which ultimately activates FtsI and catalyzes cell wall synthesis. etc etc. Basically, you learn all the specific enzymes and proteins involved. It becomes rote memorization sometimes, but I find it interesting so it’s okay. Be prepared to put in time to study.
The lab portion of the class involves learning aseptic techniques and how to culture bacteria on agar plates and broth. You learn how to run differential tests in order to identify species of bacteria. You practice using the microscope and observe specimens, as well as learning how to stain bacteria (everything from simple staining to Gram staining).
At my university, there’s the microbio class for the nursing students, and a microbio class for the biology/science majors. I hear the nursing class is watered down (still not a walk in the park though). Might be different for your college.
Associates degree in Criminal Justice to Bachelors in Social Work?
hey everyone, i go to everest college and i am pursuing an associates degree in criminal justice. there are some forms of social work i can do with a degree in criminal justice but my goal in life is to become a social worker – the title, and for that you need at the very least a bachelors degree.
My professor tells me that from an associates degree – even in criminal justice i can jump to a bachelors in social work and be completed in about 2years more. I do know they have some similarities but i just want to know if the basics are the same, do you think its possible? or should i just go ahead and transfer to a college that has the official social work program?

Ok I just graduated from a Jr. College with an Associate of Science degree. So far I have done well in Calc and Phys. I thought that physics one was more understandable to me so I am going to choose a degree in Civil or Mechanical engineering. I find machines pretty interesting and I know most of the basics but as far as advanced machinery and transmissions I am lost. I have remolded houses though and know a thing or to about that. Although I could not build a house or a car If asked. I just wanted to know the similarity’s and differences among the two degrees. Some of the strengths and weaknesses. which would be better If I wanted to work in one place without traveling. How long of internships do both degrees require. Thanks for your help
They aren’t very similar at all. Mechanical engineering is all about designing machines and systems. It’s pretty math intensive but it’s also a very broad field. Just about every industry has the need for them.
Civil engineering is more of planning city layouts, zoning, bridges, etc. It does require math but not nearly as much. I don’t mean to knock on civil engineers but their job and the degree is quite a bit easier to get. That being said, it is also pretty high in demand.
As far as salary you can’t go wrong with either. Depending on where you go, you’ll probably get paid a bit more for mechanical.
Internships–totally depends on the school. My school, ISU, doesn’t require that you have any internship experience at all. Most companies would like to see at least one summer of internship, or a semester of coop experience though.
It doesn’t matter whether or not you have a AA what matters is if you complete your GE (general education) for the institute that you are transfering to. Which would be the IGETC which qualifies for both UC and Cal State. If you have any more question email me at dcab2121@yahoo.com
Meeting an online friend in person…plz give me ADVICE!!!?
have a different situation, never been through something of this sort. The thing is that I became friends with a guy through facebook…he added me because our mutual friend passed away…and he wanted to get further information on the funeral and how everything happened. I made a group for the loving memory of my friend..and I got several people emailing me or adding me to see what exactly happened…
Anyhow, that guy and I talked in July..just briefly about the funeral arrangements and about the death altogether. The first time I talked to him…I found out that he went to University of IL…we were just talking about our jobs and backgrounds. In July, I thought nothing of it…I just thought..well he is just another person asking me about our mutual friend.
So now lets move forward to December…I saw him online, and asked him about the masters program at U of I, because I am thinking about graduate school…well this time I spoke to him..we got into detail with other things about our lives as well. We found that we only live 20 minutes away, we have numerous mutual friends(yet never met each other!!!), we got our associates degree from the same university, and so on. We both couldn’t stop talking to one another, because this time we were finding that we have soo many similarities. The best part of this, is that since that day…we talk online and over the phone for long hours..just talking about our lives…we never get bored lol..I have never been through this before..I feel that I am very attached to this person that I have NOT MET IN PERSON YET. What should I do? And yes, he does mention that whenever he doesn’t get a chance to speak to me…he misses me lol…and while we are both at work, we can’t stop thinking about each other..
He is well settled, he has a great job as a network administor, and he is currently pursuing his masters degree. However, he is 3 years older then me…is that a big difference?
I would appreciate advice on this situation…never been through this. He said we should meet in person someday…lol
I’ve been through similar… I ended up making a meet up date, he flew in, and it worked! I made an absolute fool of myself by slipping on a rainy covered gas station carport, great first impression, lol.
Pretty much, suggest a meet up, but have something to do if things get awkward being face to face and nervous. Such as… a cool museum, a zoo, etc. Something you both enjoy so you can talk about it and open up. Perhaps end up in a coffee shop once you’re comfortable together.
