A good community college in the city of Chicago?
I am an adult who is trying to transfer one day to a university but am still working on Associates degree in community college. I am considering a move from California to Chicago, but want to know which city colleges are good there. I don’t want to end up in the hood, but a progressive school downtown that will inspire me to feel good about moving would be great, and that has affordable tuition while I find my footing in the city. Any advice, reviews that could be helpful?

This is a good paralegal school. It ABA approved and is accredited.

Do NOT go to a for-profit ‘university’ like Univ of Phoenix. Your associates degree will not be acknowledged by any other universities (and most employers) so if you ever wanted to go on to get a bachelor’s degree then you would only be able to go to UOP, since they are the only ones who accept their crap credit.

UOP is also extremely expensive. Most in-state public universities and community colleges are tremendously cheaper than UOP and other for-profits.

Honestly, you’d be much better off getting any associates at the local community college. You know your credits will transfer to just about any university in the country, and it will be a bargain. They will also not try to scam you like UOP as they are not in it for the money.

I don’t love the AI chain of schools. Not a great reputation. But that said, the AI of Pittsburgh is absolutely the best AI.

Know that most of the online programs in your major are at for-profit schools, not at not-for-profits. Thus what you really want is a school that is regionally accredited, even if it is for-profit. That regional accreditation is key. Without it, some employers won’t accept your degree, you can’t transfer your credits to another decent school, and you can’t get into a grad school, should your path take you in that direction. So make sure any school you are considering is regionally accredited. The AI chain is not.

There are three schools that offer graphic design online that I consider worth recommending. All are regionally accredited. I believe that all offer an associates, but they may only offer bachelors degrees. You will have to check.
    - Savannah College of Art and Design
    - The Academy of Art University
    - SUNY Empire State

The SUNY program isn’t perfect for you. It’s a degree in arts, not specifically in graphic design, and SUNY Empire State isn’t exactly known for its art programs. But it’s an option, and it’s reputable, academically.

The Academy of Art University has a mixed reputation, but it’s not a bad school. Part of their rep is because it’s actually open admissions – their mission as a school is to provide an art education to anyone who wants one. So it’s *very* easy to get into. What it also means is that they use their actual classes to weed out students who can’t hack it. The end result is that the school lets anyone in, but graduates only those who can do the work. I feel their graduates are actually quite strong.

SCAD is the best respected art school on that list. It’s not an elite level art school, but it has a solid reputation in the arts, and it’s certainly one of the best art schools in its region. High quality programs, solid classes, best overall reputation.

Of the three that I mention, I’d have you check SCAD first. If they don’t offer an associates, and you must do an AA rather than a BA/BFA, then try AAU. On that list, AAU is likely your most expensive option, but I *know* they offer an associates.

SCAD is also pricey, but its good reputation softens that price a bit. SUNY is your least expensive option, but probably also your least “solidly art” option, so really not a great fit.

There aren’t a lot of reputable online options in the arts. Your choices are limited.
