This website explains what Health Information Technology is http://www.hhs.gov/healthit/

If you wanted to get a bachelors degree you would look for a university that has a health education and promotion degree. That way you have the technology background and also the ability to act as a liason between the doctors and the patients.

Well, there is quite a difference between bachelors and associates as far as employment goes… not to mention that a lot of people are having trouble finding a job, right now. Especially in the IT and Computer Science fields.

As for certifications… employers generally love any kind of Microsoft of Cisco systems certificates.

What certification exams can I take with an associate degree in Information Technology?

  10. CKSmalley says:

There are a myriad of certification exams one can take with an AA degree in IT. I suppose if it were me, I would go with something that I have either the most interest in or in something that I know a good amount of information about already.

It also depends on what you want to become. Do you want to become a technician? Or a programmer? Or an engineer? Each certification opens up new doors of opportunity to the next step in your career path.

If you want to go with a vendor neutral certification, CompTIA (www.comptia.org/certifications.aspx) is a great place to start. Here, you can explore a boatload of certifications. Pick one that interests you, and away you go!

If you want a specific vendor certification (ie. Microsoft, Cisco, Linux, etc.), you would want to visit their respective corporate web sites to find out more information about their certification processes.

Fees for certifications vary widely, but it’s generally considered a good return on investment in your career. IT professionals with at least 1 certification in their field tend make 20-25% more annually.

I would also recommend that you continue your education and get a BA degree, with a major in Computer Science, Management of Information Sciences (MIS), or something similar. This, with a certification or two, will put you on the short list of many hiring managers looking for highly skilled IT professionals.

Hope this helps, and good luck in your future endeavors!
